Topic: Are two decks enough for house music DJ'ing?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hello. I am just entering the world of Dj'ing and I've come up to the decision that the Numark Mixtrack will be a good starting controller for me. The Numark setup will be my introduction into the "sport" as it meets my maximum budget at the moment. What I would like to know is if you need more than two decks to have a good, dynamic sound.

I don't know if my question is vague, or makes sense. Keep in mind- I'm a noob ;)

thank you.

In my opinion, especially for a beginner, two decks is more than enough. If you don't have experience with more than two decks, you'll find that often times you will have too much going on, the beats won't match as well as you want them to, and itll result in a disruption of the flow on the dance floor. Get experience with 2 decks using you Mixtrack Pro and then move on from there.

I havent seen a DJ use more than 2 decks while performing live. Some people talk about wanting 4 decks but the reality is, 2 is enough. Look at all the top djs of the world. They use 2 decks.

i mix house with 2 decks.

come to think of it i mix everything with 2 decks.

even if i had 4 decks set up i would still probably only use the 2. well 2 at a time.

i believe that 2 decks is ok but you will do better mixing(when you improve a bit) with 3 decks... 4 decks is really 2 mutch for live..decks set up will work in studio only when you need to do things really fast and the point is to mix only 1 song.. basic idea for many djs is deck 1 and deck 2 using for songs and deck 3 for live sampling

why would you use a third deck for live sampling? thats what most people use an FX unit for. or a midi keyboard. or a regularmapped keyboard. or a remapped midi controler. or a launch pad or chaos pad etc etc..

if i were to hook up more decks i would be using them for chopping, looping and mashing.

Sometimes I'll use 4 decks, decks 1 & 2 for my main tracks, deck 3 for a drum loop and deck 4 has a battle record or scratch sounds on it. And yes I can have all 4 going at once, not for any great length of time but still 4 decks is 4 decks..............

Bring it, lol!!

i used to use 2 dual decks (cd's rack mounted in a cube)

4 decks and 6 are very new , at least to many

i think like all new things some embrace it and some are skeptical that it's a gimic

my default skin is the default 4 deck

i do enjoy experimenting with other skins , and i like Format and Cstoll skins

i think it is interesting to try and do new things with the 4 deck (and more )

i would suggest that to someone new , 4 decks might be an easy way to start and why

artificially limit them to what others have done ?? the equipment and the software "in the good ole days"

isn't half as good as now ......

Most of the time I use two decks...but I do find myself using four decks more and more for live remixing - Richie Hawtin, James Zabiela style (but no where near as good!).

As for when your starting off...two decks is fine...but don't let fear of failure put you off just having a go with four decks and having fun.

Most of those djs are cheats, they using prerecorded sets and they just mess around with samples and effects.

Just start with as many decks as you have hands... 2 is fine... unless you a mutant spider man then its 8 i'm afraid!!!

Get as many tabletop as you need, maybe you won't need more than 2, later 3 or 4.. depends how you mix
Have a good night

This picture doesnt say anything. It has 2 setups. You can look a tons of youtube videos of many djs and the third decks are not being used. Its a Backup incase the other fails. Ask the majority of Djs and ask them to give you a Honest opinion. They will tell you 2 decks is enough. I DJ in many different clubs " Not just one " in many with many djs aswell. Nyc has thousands of clubs and you might see three turntables or 3 cdjs in a few clubs but the fact still remains that many use 2 decks.

You can use what ever you like but im saying " That Majority " use two. A few pictures dont compare to the millions of djs out there.

To answer your question in a word...
