Can you load it on more than one machine if you are the only person using it? If I decide to go digital as well as CD, I want to be able to have a backup laptop all ready to go. And I want to load it on my desktop to practice.

Simple answer...

Yes. You can load it on more than one computer AS LONG AS YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE USING THE PROGRAM !!!

According to the EULA, when you buy a license for vdj, it grants you (the user) use of the software. In other words, as long as you are the only user, you may install the software on as many machines as you like.
