Pretty sure that Cooler is 1U - It's only 29mm tall total and many of the reviews are from people using it in 1U applications "Great cooler for 1u chassis" "Very flat, about the same height as the ram boards next to it. Fits in a 1U with room to spare" Left out the CD/dvd Drive cause all of the Cases that could contain a 5.25" and 3.5" drive (19"x25") were beyond the dimensions of the mixdeck case(16"x28) - interesting you say that about the Hitachi drives, specifically chose that one over the Western Digital due to poor QC on the WD parts . It will be interesting to see how this turns out . I really hope you pull it off I am sure there are plenty of mixdeck owners like me out there that would follow suit.

Yeah it'll fit, was reading the wrong thing. Like I said its only what I've heard about those drives, have never actually used one. Why did you suggest an I3 verses a dual core or core 2 duo though?

If you did this, it will be one phat rig.

The processor is basically 2 generations newer and it only has a 65w TDP It is dual core at 3.1Ghz with hypethreading and graphics integrated on the CPU package that are much better than the 4 year old geforce 9300 that was listed in your first post. Also the 1155 platform should be compatible with the Ivy bridge processors that will come out in the next few years so it should be a platform you can upgrade later instead of a dead end. And at $80 it is pretty affordable.

Here are some benchmark comparisons based on TDP and Ghz and price: must be 65w or under to use in a 1U case

I3 2100 @ 3.1ghz $80 ------- CPU mark 3,815

E6700 @ 3.2ghz $85 --------- CPU mark 2,174

E8500 @ 3.16 Ghz $210 ------ CPU mark 2,416

I5 2405 @ 2.5ghz quad core $210 ------ CPU mark 4,625

Another CPU it could be compared to is the C-2-D E8500 @ 3.16GHZ but cost $210 here is a link to a direct comparison between I3 2100 vs E8500 on Anandtech:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/289?vs=55

some comparisons are more dramatic than others but the I3 is clearly the better processor be sure to look closely because in some tests shorter bars are better. The comparison list did not have the E6700 available but the result would be significantly more dramatic for a CPU at the same price point.

As far as graphics are concerned here are the numbers for the HD 2000 graphics engine on the I3 2100 and the geforce 9300 from your first post.

HD 2000 --------- 3d mark 05 5,802 ------------- 3d mark vantage 1000

Geforce 9300 ------ 3d mark 05 3,435 ------------ 3d mark vantage 267

the HD 2000 is much better along with improvements in how the I3 processor handles streaming video vs the C2D the graphics level is significantly better than the geforce 9300.

So what your saying is that with these new processors I don't need a video card with its own dedicated ram because the processor can handle it?? All this tech talk hurts my head, lmao!!

And oh yeah Crash its gonna happen, but like most people I got more time then money, lol!

Ina 1U case a dedicated graphics card will produce an insane amount of heat and it would have to be mounted at 90' to the motherboard with a special adapter and I don't think you would have enough room for a graphics card and a full size hard drive. With 8gb of system RAM you can use the OS to Dedicate some to the Graphics. while I don't know how it would handle video mixing - probably fine - It will be more than adequate for standard desktop graphics. The HD 2000 graphics engine is the best integrated solution that is available for a 1U design. The motherboard has an HDMI output for the monitor .

Integrated graphics used to be a separate chip soldered to the motherboard but now they are part of the CPU. Makes things much more tidy and able to give better performance in a small package like a 1u rack mount.

I think that's what the riser cards are for, they turn everything on its side. Hmm guess I'll have to check into that cause I was gonna go with a card that had its own ram like my laptop now and I've never had a problem running videos with effects and its a vista system, lol!

Thanks for the time

which card are you using in your laptop? could easily compare it to the HD 2000 graphics engine for you if know the model #

believe me this research is as much for my own benefit as yours ;) my laptop is getting a little long in the tooth trying to decide of this option is better and just use the laptop for daily stuff and build a dedicated machine for DJ or to upgrade the laptop and use it for everything.

NVIDIA Geforce 8600 I believe, I'm in my truck right now, lol! My laptop is an Asus G1S, nothing special but its been dam near flawless since I got it.

The card you have is almost identical to the HD2000 in terms of performance -so while not an improvement it would not be a problem either. I think any small difference in graphics card capabilities will be more than made up for with the more powerful processor.

Geforce 8600GT ------ 3d mark 05 6,175 ----- 3d mark vantage 1,040

HD 2000 Graphics ------ 3d mark 05 5,802----- 3d mark vantage 1,000

Over a mix of 32 different benchmarks the HD 2000 is 5% slower than the Geforce 8600 GT

The HD 2000 Graphics engine can use up to 1.7GB of System RAM when needed to dedicate to graphics.

The processor comparison is a different story. The G1S typically came with a dual core t7500 processor it scores 1,273 on CPU mark vs 3,815 for I3 2100

That is a 300% increase over your current processor. Not to mention the increased speed of a 7200rpm desktop HD with 64mb of Cache

If you have the 7200 RPM upgraded HD for your G1S it has an average transfer rate of 46mb/s
The Hitachi 3TB drive has a transfer rate of 150mb/s

The difference will be even more noticeable if you are currently using an external HD

Well that sounds good then! Man I'm just hoping things run aswell as what they do now, lol!! When this gets done its gonna be awesome!!

Hey Thanks for all the info, tsunami been most helpful!!

If the Graphics are going to be a problem it looks like there is a less well known option that Intel recently made available it is the I3-2105 The same processor as the 2100 but with a more powerful graphics engine the HD 3000 instead of HD 2000.
This increases the graphics performance by 14%

The scores for comparison on the two tests are - 6,715 and 1539

The downside is it is a little more expensive at $140

Still a 65w processor.

Update:

some new parts from AMD have changed the game as far as video performance is concerned so a rethink was in order.

Here is an updated parts list for anyone who cares - or for myself to reference later so i don't forget:)

Huey,

That first one you pointed out was really low spec, you would have to upgrade everything.

I've been thinking about a 1u pc and touch screen too since seeing dj dads new touch screen skin however recently got into a bit of bother so decided to give it a miss. Basically you can't work on it without being plugged into mains and that would sometimes cause a problem for me as I work on music in bars and hotel sitting rooms and when traveling.

A DJ that was working for me recently couldn't meet me half way on route and swap some music over because he was a desktop guy, coursed problems that I'm not used to so decided to stick to the flexibility that I have now.

I think this is more to have a stand alone PC that all you use it for is DJ'ing in addition to your everyday laptop. You could keep access to this pc via your home wireless over the internet using a remote desktop app like splashtop. Sounds like your dude's problem was caused by not having a portable back-up like a separate external hard drive which you should have no matter what kind of computer you use - Laptop or desktop.

The advantage to this particular application is that there is already enough room in the Mixdeck Case to build a 1u pc and then you just have to carry the mixdeck case and no extra laptop case.

Charlie brings up a good point about power. I would never run my rig off laptop power for an extended period of time, but it is very nice to have the battery there for when power flickers or someone trips over a plug. The computer doesn't crash, saving you recovery time and avoiding the risk of corrupting your filesystem. Over the years i have gone back and forth between laptops and desktop (shuttle, rackmount, bookshelf size, etc.) and have always come back to the laptop for that same reason. My most recent non-laptop rig had a UPS in it which seemed like a great idea at the time, but added immemsely to the weight of the rig. That rig was great and had eveything you could possibly want in it, including a 24 inch LCD, RAID, SSD, Denon HD2500, UVC33, full video mixer, even has silly glowing lights in teh computer case hydraulic shocks for the coffin cover (seriously) but ended up being too big & heavy to be considered mobile... It will be on Craigslist soon if anyone in the NY area is interested ;)

Good luck with your new project though. I am an Engineer by day, and enjoy creating my rigs almost as much as I enjoy using them at a gig, so I understand your excitement!
