Topic: Problems with Keylock Feature in VDJ v. 6.0.1

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hello everyone,

Ive been having some problems with the Keylock feature in VDJ (v. 6.0.1). Almost every time that I attempt to use this feature, I get some rather annoying crackling noise at seemingly random time intervals in the audio track when I set it to a new BPM. As soon as I deactivate Keylock, the track runs and sounds perfectly smooth, regardless of the BPM I set it to. The crackling noise is especially noticeable when both decks are activated with the Keylock feature and the BPM from both decks is changed.

The result is that its essentially impossible to mix a clean-sounding set.

At first I thought it might have something to do with the performance of my machine as well as that of the software. Under the performances tab I set everything to the highest latency; the crackling noise seemed to diminish for the most part when using Keylock, but then the track would simply not beat to the "right beat" of the newly adjusted BPM (it seemed to beat at slightly irregular intervals, sometimes it would also skip a beat). The effect is then that the track sounds "forced", and simply doesn't work well for general mixing.

I am working on a Compaq 6910p Laptop, with 2.2 Ghz and 2 GB Ram running on Windows Vista Business. I am not using the video feature in VDJ and have no other applications running in the background. I even tried to assign Virtual DJ a higher priority using the Task Manager in Windows, but I am not sure whether this has made a difference or not.

In any case, I believe my system is fast enough and capable to run Virtual DJ in its full capacity (disregarding video features), since I had for the most part no problems with the previous version of VDJ (the crackling noise problem presented itself only rarely).

Could anyone please tell me what exactly this problem is, what is causing it, and how it could be fixed (whether in Virtual DJ, Windows, etc.)?

Thank you so much for your help.

How about some Performance Settings from the VirtualDJ config ? What soundcard do you use? Is it ASIO? What are those settings?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

I am currently using Numark Total Control and Numark DJ IO, which is an ASIO Soundcard.

Ok, now we know the card ... what about ...

How about some Performance Settings from the VirtualDJ config ?

and

Soundcard -> What are those settings?

VDJ Performance config settings:

Preset: Best Quality (ive worked with this setting in the past; it hasnt given me any problems):
Sound Card: Latency - 256 (5ms), Overclock
Scratch: Optimize for Quality, use Enhanced Algorithm (Filter Size: 35, Filter Smooth)
48kHz <-> 44kHz - Basic Interpolation
Master Tempo - Advanced (Complexity: 3, Spatialization: 0)

ASIO Soundcard Information:

Device: Numark USB Audio Device
Inputs: 0
Outputs: 4
Clock Rote: 44.1kHz
Word Length: 24
Driver Version 2.8.9
Firmware Version: 1.0.1(k1)
Current Audio Latency Settings: 256 samles - 7.9ms / 29.4ms

Sound Card: Latency - 256 (5ms), Overclock

Change to Latency Auto and Uncheck the Overclock

Hi,

I'll chime in also. At my gig Saturday I encountered the same type of problem of my cue channel getting the "crackling" sound when moving controls like the fader. In the past I fixed it by toggling the Safe Mode and/or Overclock in the config.

Things were running good Friday night but Saturday something changed. It seems to have occured after I loaded an MP3 which really messed up the load speed of all following song/videos. I had to reboot VDJ to clear the problem. It seems like I have some MP3s that mess up the VDJ buffer & I don't know how to identify them. It seems pretty random, but I'll find it eventually.

After I rebooted (actually twice because the loading problem returned) the crackling in my cue phone started. I was at the end of the gig and didn't bother fixing it. When I do fix the problem with the config clicks I get an audible interruption and I didn't want to hit my audience with it. I put up with the annoyance.

I'm using a HP DV-9500 with an Expresscard for main-out and the internal sound card for cuing. Overall it's running my video gigs pretty well.

ive also got those noises on my rmx so it must be setting problem/latency.as i dont use timecodes ive stopped setting my sound to asio and just choose rmx control as it uses asio as default as far as im aware and i leave safe and overlock unchecked, not sure what my latency should be though as i said i dont use vynil or timecodes hope will get it spot on in the near future

Thank you so much, that seems to have fixed the problem.
