Topic: ALTERNATIVE????

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I have a sort of situation.... I was asked to play at a venue, a Jazz and Martini bar in a hotel main tourism area in Jamaica this Sunday August 31st. They requested alternative music... and that is all they said....

(remember now that I play videos)

Have no idea what they expect me to play... as to type of genre they need.. any ideas???...

Please.. urgently... post your alternative play lists so i can have an idea.

I would really appreciate it

I also have gigs Friday and Saturday as well, one at least 3 hours drive so time is not on my side at all,

C'mon guys your help and prompt response is GREATLY NEEDED.. this would appear to be a regular weekly gig in an area that I would love to break into...

Yikes! Alternative covers a wide range of music. I would say to be safe, stick to mainstream alternative artists like Nickleback, Coldplay, Saving Abel, etc... Alternative is now being called "Modern Rock", so another place to look for ideas would be the Billboard charts. (www.billboard.com) Also check Promo Only's Modern Rock section to see what is out. I'm a strip club DJ so I play just about everything, which might not work for your venue. You may even want to hunt down some compilation CDs with older alternative songs on them. (I know you do videos, but for the sake of time CDs will be quicker until you build you library up.) But to be on the safer side, try to find out exactly what kind of "alternative" music they want to be played. For instance Nickelback is a very different band from Disturbed or Godsmack.

thanks djderricke..

i will definitely look in to that
I have also sent an e-mail to the promoters to ask that I at least one event night so i can get a good summary of music.. patrons, vibes, setting etc
but for now i need some play lists
Nickelback.... hmm.. think i might have a few

agree with derricke mate, get back onto the customer and find out exactly what he means, then we have a better ballpark to play in.

Some of the best alternative was from the 80s-90s. Bands like The Cure and New Order set the standard most alt bands now follow. Why not go back to the roots? But, yes always find out exactly what the customer wants......

My friend,

I've a list with songs for you.
I guess they like the pop songs from the 80's and a little (soft)rock music.
Also a little advice.
Start the evening with some easy listning songs.
Save the best for last. (the best uptempo songs and the best song that everybody like to sing/scream)
If they like jazz, maybe some jazz vids from Robbie Williams or Michael Bublé.
But also ask if you can play other kind of music and give some examples.
The more genres you can play, the easier you can make a party for them.

Have fun mon:

Katrina and the Waves - Walking on sunshine
The clash - should I stay or should I go
Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough (Live)
Robbie Williams - Let Me Entertain You
Blondie - One Way Or Another
Abc - When Smokey Sings
B52 - Loveshack
Bluebells - Young At Heart
Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover
Foreigner - Cold as ice
Aerosmith - Walk this way
U2 - Pride
Simple Minds - Alive & Kicking
Toploader - Dancing In The Moonlight
Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)
Sniff 'n The Tears - Driver's Seat.mp3
Robert Palmer - Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)
Robbie Williams - Rock Dj
Queen - We Will Rock You
Oasis - Wonderwall
Police - Roxanne
Chumbawumba - Tubthumping
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Nick Kamen - I Promised Myself
New Radicals - You Get What You Give
David Bowie & Mick Jagger - Dancing In The Street
Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy
Kim Wilde - Kids In America
Inxs - Suicidal Blonde
Kenny Loggins - Footloose
Narada Michael Walden - Gimme Gimme
J. Geils Band - Centerfold
J Geils Band - Freeze Frame
