Topic: MP3 legal downloads?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Ok, before you delete my post! ;-)

I have a legitimate question. Are we allowed to discuss sites that permit LEGIT download mp3's for use?

Specifically are there re-mix services that do this? I mean pay to play...i DO NOT mean p2p networks!
Is there a pay to play service simular to Hot Tracks? Disconet (ok, I am dating myself!)?

I know of a few. I am just looking for a bigger catalogue.

I hope I haven't offended the powers that be. I just think this is a legit question, since I do NOT support p2p useage!

I am curious!

Thanks,
Ronny

Is there a good pay to play D/l service for mp3's? I am talking about good club length re-mixes, simular to the kind found on Hot Tracks, Ultimix, Disconet, etc.

I am not talking about your basic mp3 d/l service. They pretty much just have album cuts or radio edits.

I will have to check them out. Is there anything that you need to do to the files??

I know with the audio you have to burn the songs on CD and then rip them back in the computer.
There is a program that I found that supposedly removes the need to do this process by automatically "unlocking" the files and converting to MP3. It is completely legitimate because songs have to already be liscensed. The only problem is, it won't work with the newest version of iTunes (the developers are working on it, but nothing yet...) I don't know how well it works because I found out about it too late.

I'm not sure if you have to do anything like that with video files from iTunes. Apple seems to favor .mov videos, and I don't think VDJ can play those, so you might have to use some conversion software.

So which one is the cheapest ? And is the quality of all good ? And can you play all the mp3s in virtual dj? Because some mp3s are protected, like the ones from itunes.
And is there a place where you can download at a monthly fee instead of paying per song?

As far as I know, the only download service that has actual MP3s is eMusic. I do not recommend them however, their selection is mostly in classical music. You can get a 100 download trial version for free (have to unsubscribe within a month or they bill you). I got some karaoke tracks from them, but they really don't have much.
Basically any online download service that you use, you'll have to burn the songs on CDs and rip them back in MP3 format. I have used WalMart, Yahoo, and iTunes. WalMart is cheapest (88 cents each as opposed to the 99 everywhere else) but sometimes they don't have all the songs you want, so you have to fish around at the different services.
As for subscription services, I'm not sure if you're allowed to burn any of the tracks on CD, just on your computer and compatible MP3 players. I haven't tried Napster though...You'll have to ask someone that's tried the Napster integration with VDJ. (Personally, I don't see how it would be all that great unless you had an internet connection during your gig.)

*Since VDJ can play copy-protected wma files, you can probably use such sites as Napster, Yahoo, WalMart, etc. and play the songs without converting. However, there are issues with having to play the songs first in Windows Media Player to acquire the liscenses and such. Also, even though you are legally liscensed to use the file, VDJ will not let you record with them. (What about fair use? =/ *sigh*) So personally, I think it would be in one's best interest to take the time to burn the songs on CD and rip them back in the computer. You get your backup copy that way too, so it's not really a waste of time.
You can also use a CD-RW if you don't want to waste the CDs, but it takes longer and CD-Rs cost about 1/10th of what you pay for a single track...

thanx,
is there someone here who uses napster or yahoo?
I heard you have to play the songs at least once in a month while your connected to internet, but you can also do something at their site to validate the songs?

I use Napster and pretty much as long as you go and use Napster a few times a month ie. get new songs you are cool, however one downfall that I don't like is the fact that sometimes they get rid of songs from their library and you don't know til you play them. Cheers Brian
