would it be great if virtual dj would manufacture a mixer specially for vdj?a usb mixer with the maya 44 built in it.you would be able to connect ur tt to it.i would think it would be a great idea>>>>>>what do yall think

Hmm. The only thing I don't like about this idea is that I didn't think of it first. I think Allen & Heath (and some others) are setting the way when they introduce products like the professional Xone mixer with MIDI controls built right in. The way I see it is that there are a couple of different products that might be well received.

DAC style controller

XP10 style controller

Hercules style controller

Now there are already products in each of these spaces, but there is certainly room for improvement in all three. Since I use TCCD (TCV users might agree with me), I would love something like a "PRO QUALITY" version of the Hercules, without the silly wheels on or maybe with them on there.

A real working DJ quality mixer with enough buttons to effectively control VDJ would be a dream come true. Til then, I'm sticking to my Denon DNX100, (2) xp10s and (2) DZ1200.

I would love to see Atomix get with Numark, Pioneer, or Allen & Heath and have a major board manufacturer do it for them. Those guys have a lot more experience doing it well.

This would really be great to have ;-)

Actually this is something i have been working on for a while now
on spare time and weekends. Mostly just for the fun of it and
that i want one myself.

So let me share what i have been doing so far and my ideas,
if you think i'm going the wrong way in any part or if you have any
other input- Please, let me know.

And yes, i do have a background in analog and digital design/construction
and software development on a professional basis. So this is really happening,
but since it's not a commercial project i just got to find the time to finish
everything.

// Project Main goal:
- MUST work with Lap Top Computer
- To construct and build a cheap, flexible and professional controller/mixer to use with VDJ.
- Anyone with basic skills in electronics should be able to build it.
- Controller should be able to work without the mixer, Like DAC, XP10 etc
- Should be Module based. Not just one big PCB.
- Electronic material cost-limit: ca $200-$250.

First, a system like this is based on 3 different parts:
- Sound Card
- VDJ/Deck controller
- Mixer. VDj or external

// Soundcard
I'm not going to build that so any 5.1 would do.

// MIDI-Based or not ?!
Since i have a HDJC this was where i started. All MIDI, that must be the way ;-)
But after testing this approach (midiBox) for a while and thinking a lot i
decided to drop MIDI. This is the reasons:
- Building a MIDI-controller is really hard for most people to do.
- You don't need it for the VDJ/Deck controller part.
- See Mixer below.

// VDJ/Deck controller
This is the part i'm working on at the moment. First i did it via
MIDI but dropped that. Then i tested a general PCI IO-Card and that
worked really well. But since one of the project rules is that it must
work with a Lap Top i can't use that. So it must be USB based.
I'm now testing a couple of different USB solutions for the communication
and most works really well.

Re: Jog wheel
I'm also testing different approaches to do a jog wheel. This isn't really hard
to add, it's only about how much money you want to spend on it. You could go
the HDJC way (ca $10) or the XP10 (ca $50-75) per Jog Wheel. I'm trying
to do a much better one than HDJC for ca $25 in materials.

One important issue when designing this if is you want a a really good
scratch fuctionality or not. I never scratch myself, just use them for
cueing etc. So this issue is not decided yet.

Re: pitch and volume slider. It's just about what resolution you want.
(256 or 1024 steps.)

Re: number of VDJ buttons. It's is easy to add as many as you want. But
how many do i really need ?

// Mixer. VDj or external ?!
I have also tested the built in Mixer/EQ versus an external a lot.
I have decided to do a analog external pro module based mixer, this is why:
- VDJ EQ are not really good. I use EQ a lot when mixing.
- I want to be able to add as many channels as i want 2,4,8 etc
so that i also can connect external CD-players etc to it.
- Etc

The mixer is module based and by picking the number of modules
that you want (input channels etc) you can have any kind of mixer
you prefer (battle/club/production etc).

// Current Status
I'm at the moment working on the Deck controllers/Jog wheel.
The hardware works well and it's the software that have
the focus at the moment.

// Problems etc.
The main problem is the integration with VDJ. At the moment
for testing purpose i control VDJ by sending keystrokes to it.

This works ok but the way to go in the final version is to do a
Console Mapper Plugin. But so far i haven't written any
Plugin and C++ is not my main language (C#, .NET 2.0 is).
So that will also take some time to solve.

When the project is done i will provide:
- Schematics inc PCB CAd files (Eagle)
- Drivers and other software to make it run and extend it.
- Front panel CAD files 10" and 19" (Front Panel Designer,
www.schaeffer-apparatebau.de )
- Etc
to anyone that want's them.

I might also be able to provide:
- Professional made PCBs
- Professional made front panels, 19"
- Built and tested PCBs
in small volumes depending on my current work situation ;-)

Well, i guess that's it. So - what do you all think ?

if vdj would manufacture a usb powered mixer with the famous maya 44 we wouldnt have to buy the maya n a mixer it would be the two in one.it would basically be a dj console without the jogwheels a mayya built in it and more button to contro samples,efx,kill switches would be great,crossfader modes like scratch,smooth,full,cut.a tap button to fixed the bpm.cause vdj dont get 16 beatssongs right its based on 4 beats songs.what do yall think.if vdj would manufacture a mixer with these presets i would definectly get one.what do yall think???????????????

DJConsole MKII ?!

Is that a new project or an old ?

I remember that i have seen a controller for VDJ a long time ago with a standard CD as a centered Jog Wheel (Cool idea, i have also tested that). I think that was MIDI based. Is that the one ? Any images ?

NO... the Hercules MK2 version have 2 x line-in... ;) all you need

I would hardly call the Hercules a "Pro" quality device. The xp10 barely, but the hercules? No way. The latency in the software mixer alone makes this thing a non-starter for serious work. Add to that the cramped layout and the fact they they try to fit 100 buttons dials and sliders in a device with about as much real estate with as a VHS tape makes it impossible to do any real work with, at least for me. My Hercules also started developing really bad slider action after only a month of serious work, channels bleeding over because the slider wasn't making contact, etc.

The Hercules may be a nice little piece, and I am glad I bought mine but let's not get carried away. This thing isn't a pro piece of gear by any stretch of the imagination. Anyone who buys it and thinks it is, will be soon disappointed.

(and yes I know some of you, Andre, use it nightly in the club. glad it works for you. didn't work for me)

Check out the Kontrol DJ Kontroller. It is a perfect fit for Virtual DJ.

http://www.kontrol-dj.com/html_eng/main.htm

We have been selling them and using them for a year now here in the U.S.

They are not a toy like the Hercules. They are built out of high quality parts and materials.

LOL@ you iamjef. Is this your way of making a commercial announcement, Hercules is a toy ? Do we see that that thing you promote, in stores ? Wait, I don't see any internal pics of it, so what are the high quality parts names of it then ?

Don't wanna go in bash mode here, but ya only receive respect unless ya give it. Right now Hercules offers the same with a little more for a smaller price : With soundcard, software, 2 year warranty and continuing software develepment. That, for 240, while your product cost's 340. Quality parts, sure, just proof it, don't just say it. And for ya disrespect towards Hercules, at least they are in the shops and sell well ;o)
