Composure, that's what it takes to make all this work when things go wrong.

So here's the short of the long from this weekends double karaoke gig.

The first thing that went wrong was I had the time wrong.
I was going by the last two years and planned on starting at 1pm.
So I am slowly getting gear moved and set up for my 2nd gig which is adults only and one flight upstairs.

As I walk by I notice the activities schedule pinned up on the wall and holy shit, I start at noon.
Now i'm behind the 8 ball and running.

So I fire up, everything is fine.
I turn on the tv and nothing happens........
I try again, it comes on but only for 15 seconds.
In deep shit now, how do I do karaoke without a tv?
The monitor on the screen is too small to have people read off it.

So now it's getting late and I figure I better get some music up.
Do sound checks on the mics.
Load a track and with signal on the mixer I have nothing out of the right side.
When I move the mains I get this scratch/pop/scratch, pissa.
Break out the progold contact cleaner/lube, nothing.....screwed.

Here come the sweats, flashes and the brain is starting to lock up.
So now i'm thinking, great I am starting 1 hour early, I will gain the hour between sets and dope out this problem, but I gotta get it going right now.

So now I start to concentrate and try my secondary channel (line mixer).
Ok, but that channel drops the mic inputs on this mixer, screwed.

So I manage to find a sweet spot above the bad, and control with the line control, ok we covered.
Then I ran my ass off to find management who did in fact have a 13" set up for testing which just happened to have a video in.
It all fell together and what seemed like an hour was 1/2 and nobody really cared.

As I played I stumbled across a Shania Twain mp3+g that logged an error and played rough at one point.
I made a note of it on my note pad.

So then I set up and start the adult gig/karaoke talent show.
3rd singer looks back at me funny.......... I got a mic dropping out.
Still haven't figured that out, but I hardly ever use karaoke so it's not like I had a reason to suspect anything.
Sure as hell that dam thing dropped out all night, I think it's in the cord, the connections are new-tight.

So I am loading tracks like a furious fool and for sure don't you know I load up that same track.
I cross my fingers and it continued to play. Then all of a sudden I get a crash warning, the video stops but the audio continues. My singer was a pro and kept right on trucking covering my ass, as I load TM and ready to boot the program again the minute she finishes.

So how'd it go Rick........?
I got two gigs out of it and another 100 and for future gigs there, and they had an absolute blast.

The lesson here is when trouble comes, keep your head, you are hopless if you can't think straight no matter what the problem or how many (as you can see) pop up in your face at once.

So I start pulling my shit apart.....

Plugged in the tv, it started to smoke.
Fairly new tv, just my luck.

Pulled down the mixer right to the main board, washed, cleaned and treated all the wipers.
reassembled the whole thing, plugged it in, same thing, toast.
1.5 years old, just my luck.

The mic cord is open right at the xlr, probably from swinging the mic.

Oh well, time for new stuff I guess.

Going with a 5" lcd monitor, not sure on the mixer yet.
I hope to wait to see what shows up at the dj summit.

Hey, it's all good.
Never been a good spanking that I didn't learn from.
Dealing with it is good conditioning, helps to build confidence that plan "B" works.

Great job keeping cool, never let them see you sweat ;) i think as a lesson to any pro is it counts to have a B plan, because what can happen someday it will.

I am almost for sure it's RCA/Composite.

The thing that I wonder about is the power supply for it.

hmm, I had such a tv, the resolution was not so good, vdj was blurry, If i could found an lcd with vga
that is small (640x480 for example) i can make a skin for it and all will be readable and usable.
But on tv/RCA out it's almost impossible to browse a files even with biggest font possible and
fullscreen browser only.
