Is the size of the new skin always going to be bigger than my screen or is there some way to fix that.

You might try making your own (low-resolution) skins.. or ask someone in the nicest possible way to make a low-res-version of it (800x600 for example).
...or if your hardware can handle it, set your desktop to a higher resolution :)
