I want to be able to control the volume using the program while connected to a controller while at my office. I used to be able to do this.

SZ (and I believe S11 as well) have hardware controlled Master Volume settings.
This means that when you move the MASTER volume control the program reads the movement but doesn't alter the level of the sound because the hardware does that already by it's own.
If you want to have the MASTER volume control to control the loudness of the master output when you use your laptop speakers you need to turn off "fake_master"
That can be done either by modifying the mapper (and have 2 different mappers, one for playing with your gear and one for office) or by creating a custom button with "fake_master off" as an action.
Then any time you use VirtualDJ with your laptop's speakers press this button once and the MASTR volume control will start modifying the volume.
I would recommend you to use the second approach (with the custom button) as it leaves smaller room for errors when playing live on a gig
