Topic: Connecting a Gemini PS-812 preamp mixer to VDJ7.41?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I am wondering if anyone has any step by step instructions to connect a Gemini PS-812 preamp mixer (which i just purchased) to VDJ 7.41...I'm having so much trouble and have to say i'm not the greatest when it comes to rc cables and connections..My VMS4 isn't working so I was wondering how can I hook it up while bypassing the VMS4 so I can use this stand-alone mixer without using turntables and cd's of course? all help appreciated!

ok my vms4 is semi working...Crossfader, mid section knobs, volume sliders, mouse pad all work and that's it..Jogwheels, play button, cue button, pause button, pitch +/- smart loop buttons etc DON'T WORK. as far as the gemini mixer it works as good as i can get it, knobs work and master volume slider work, can't figure out how to work out the samples, mic works..better than before.

How you hook up the Gemini will depend on what sound card you use.

If you use a laptop computer and external sound card (Or a desktop PC with built in sound card) and not the VMs4. You need one which provides a minimum of 2 stereo ( or 4 mono) outputs. One stereo (Or mono pair) for your left deck and one for the right deck. Just feed these into the channel inputs on the Gemini which are marked Line or Aux and check that you have the chanel input selector switch (At the top of each chanel fader) set to LINE or AUX. Make sure you dont plug into anything labled as Phono as this will cause problems. I have a PDF Copy of the user manual for this mixer on file. If you send me a PM with an email address I would be happy to send you a copy.

Ok the sampler on the Gemini ps-812 works nice!

1)I would like to see the digital vu meters light up on the Gemini mixer like it does on my VMS4. My VMS4 is the souncard which i'm now using
2)Crossfader/volume channel faders/ center knob section all work fine on VMS4
3)Everything else doesn't work on VMS4 such as Jogwheels, play/cue/pause buttons, loops/pitch etc how can i map them to work?

Thanks again for sending me the manual !

Using the VMS4 as your sound card you will only be able to use the Master output to connect to your mixer. If you want to use the VMS4 purely as a controller and the Gemini as your mixer then you will have to get hold of a sound card as mentioned before. Without this you will be unable to obtain seperate audio signals for each deck.

As long as you install the Mapper and make sure all of your drivers are up to date the VMS4 should work fine as a stand alone unit.

Regarding the VU meters on the Gemini. I believe that they will only indicate the Master Output level. If they are not indicating anything at all then it is possible that the level of the signal is very low at the Mater output section. Try turning the Master up full and see if they show anything. Best to do this with your Amplifier OFF. The other possibility of course is that they are not working and a repair is needed. If you still have problems then post some pics of how you have everthing hooked up and also showing where you have the Faders positioned so I can see where you might be going wrong.

cheers

will definitely look into a 2 stereo/4 mono pc sound card.. when i turn on the Gemini mixer the vu leds both light up then they don't light up anymore. if they initially light up i may be in lock that they are not broken..as u advised i can only find out if i get another sound card adapter like u said. I did try turning the master level to the max but no such luck.

Ok. Just a quick thought. Make sure that the effects send/receive switch is OFF. (Its between the Send And Recieve Knobs on the front panel just below the VU Meter)

If that does not solve your problem here is a test you could do to check out the VU meters.

Hook up an Ipod,cd player or other known good sound source to one input channel on the Mixer. Turn all the Channel Faders and the Master fader Down to their minimum position.

Play a track

Plug a set of headphones in and set the CUE Monitor to let you listen to channel that you have connected the sound source to and confirm that there is a signal on the channel. (Select the channel and turn the CUE/PGM knob all the way to CUE)

Set the CUE Monitor to let you listen to the Mixers Master Output. (Turn the Cue/PGM knob all the way to PGM)

Set the mixers Master Output Fader to its Maximum Position

Turn up the level fader on the channel that has the sound source and confirm that you have sound in the headphones.

Check to see if you now have a reading on the VU Meter.

If yes then its all good :-) If not then it is possible that the VU Meter is not working or that there is no signal on the master outputs from the Mixer due to a fault.

Turn the Master fader back to its minimum position and connect an Amplifier and Speakers to the XLR Outputs on the rear panel of the
Mixer.

Ensure that you have a track playing. Bring up the Master Fader and confirm the presence of a signal (IE You hear it). If not then the Mixer may have a faulty Main Output Stage. If you hear sound then the VU Meter itself is likely to be at fault.

BTW Did you get the VMS4 working with that mapper?

Thanks Daz...you were initially right..my volume faders where too low didnt want to wake the neighbours..i'm happy to say the VU meter on the Gemini mixer now is working and running perfectly!
