Topic: windows 8.1 "update" - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

if anything they made it worse. i'd like to save you all some time and say

DON'T DO IT!

I now have to restore my home machine to factory settings and am so very thankful that the club pc doesn't use windows 8.

if your gig machine is on win8 and you don't want panic moments when drivers don't work tonight then for heaven's sake wait and do it after the weekend is up. the backlash over this update is already flying all over the place.

thanks for the warning ;) will wait til monday..
I for one like windows 8 though, and metro .. but i know lots hate it ;)

what 8.1 has in Windows - i will wait and see after weekend ;) hehe

To each it's own, I have been using Windows 8.1 since the preview edition was released in the summer and it has been solid, way better than Windows 8. A lot of people do not like Windows 8 or 8.1, I just feel like these people are just afraid of change... Windows 8 does everything that Windows 7, Vista, XP can do people just like to complain. Now with Windows 8.1 you can go straight to Desktop so if you didn't like the "Metro/Modern" look hey you can pretend that it is still Windows 7/XP and look at the whole "Metro/Modern" UI portion as a revamped Start Menu (which in all reality that's what it is if you think about) but to tell people NOT to upgrade just because you are having problems is not the way to go...

My Two Cents...

agree, I think Win8 is very nice.. just takes a little to get used to a more modern interface.

And it also allows 'old school' desktop .. so there is zero in Win8 that isnt fine with me.. (can even add back start button for that matter)

;)

It looks like the update might break stuff but the clean install is ok from what I have seen on some message boards. I just went to Windows 8 on my gig machine, it fixed all of my USB dropouts on my NS7 and its alot faster. I wish I had a SSD or Hybrid drive in there. My backup duo core had Windows 8 since launch and a SSD, man it was faster than my i7 booting and opening programs.

yeah, SSD drives sure speed up things, gonna get some on my gig pc too.

I don't own windows 8, but no one, I mean no one, should update any thing, just before your gig. Is there anyone here that does not understand this?

@DjBoy01 - sound drivers went "poof" as soon as it initially restarted and so did a few other things. and yes I had already backed everything up. and spent an hour trying to get things back to normal. i'm not the only one having problems and not the only one thinking it sucks - most of the feedback on it is negative from what I have read so far.

@AMAHM - you know people do it anyway. but I am not one of them - even new versions of VDJ get a couple months of pounding out wrinkles before I put them in work computer.

Updatet my backup bootcamped MacBook Pro yesterday and everything seems ok

Will update my system tomorrow, hopefully all fine ;)

Built my new rack mount over the summer using Windows 8.1. After doing a complete validation and days of stress testing, I have had only one minor issue where is hung up for a moment. I have not been able to duplicate it and the touchscreen system has been working flawlessly. I love the faster boot time of windows 8 as well. This so far is my best system yet. It is only used for DJing and nothing else. All music is downloaded to a USB drive and then transferred over. But as others have said it is a preference. Everything on the PC is new and designed for windows 8.1. Nothing was carried over from the old system.

I update win to 8.1 and system works great.
I would say that maybe it is less CPU usage.

I have a good feeling about 8.1

Anyone else get a error message for Soundcard drivers DirectX/WDM when turning on VDJ? What did you do to fix? I updated to 8.1 this morning.

Is that a message from VirtualDJ ? if so it usually just means that your current sound setting in VDJ is not logical, just go to sound settings in VDJ and make correct one, and error message is gone at next run.

If its a Windows error message, perhaps your drivers need an update to be working in Win 8.1

That was it, thanks Norway!

no problem ;) glad it sorted.. ..

yeah had that error message pop up and also had a graphics driver error message pop up on second monitor. actually had sound issues even before that - had no sound at all when "upgrade" ran - had to uninstall, re-scan, and then load drivers twice before I could get anything out of pc, let alone vdj.

At first, VDJ was able to use my ns6 even though windows reported it as missing a driver, re installed the ns6 now windows sees it too. The only serious problem I've found so far is my Edirol M16DX won't work which sucks because I have recording sessions almost every weekend. When I try to re install its drivers it won't complete, guessing compatibility problem though it worked fine on windows 8. Guess I'll have to use ns6 for playback and the voicelive play for input in sonar until I get it sorted
