Topic: Problem with avi-files

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi!

Im trying to play and try some videomixing for first time, but some .avi files cant be played, why is that ?
Its just reading "ERROR", and when im looking at file path, its reading "the file can be played in video decoder, its impossible to play file".

Whats that mean, will it work in Pro-version ? Some .avi files works, and some not, thats strange.

Thanks in advance!

check have you the current version of directx and c++ installed...

Remember that AVI is also a carrier package, the avi's could be divx, xvid or some other codec, drag the file into a util like videoinspector :-

http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?vtb

And see what codec it uses and make sure you have the necessary codec installed.

Hi!

When i open a file in videoinspector its says "Valid: No".
So does that mean i have to convert them somehow ?

Some videos are working in both VDJ and videoinspector so i dont think there is any problems with DirectX or c++, but im not sure, i havent tried to update thoose.

Maybe it's a codec that videoinspector doesn't recognise, try mediainfo

Looks like they could be corrupted in some way, the thing is that at present there are so many confusing codec varations around that it occasionally happens, the advice re mpeg above is correct, but if the files are corrupt then a converter wont be able to read them. Do they play in VLC media player, VLC will play practically ANYTHING.

Hi!

No, thats the strange thing, thoose files that VDJ cant read, cant either VLC read/play, so im guess the are in some way corrupt.

I think you're guessing right.

TOPHOUSE, thanks for the lead on "videoinspector" that's a handy little program.

(The only thing that seems odd it won't read .vob files. I tried renaming it to mpeg and then it read the video stream but not the audio?

I think mediainfo reads vobs though renee, hang on a sec........ yes it does, also GSpot is very good (ha, don't you know it!)
