Topic: what is the difference between vob, mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I used to run vob files, now i'm trying to get VDJ to work with mpeg4. Should I convert to another file instead of mpeg4, or stay with it?

is there much difference in file size with divx 6 compared to mpeg2 as thats what i'm using just now in a 400g external drive mixed with audio & video files...Tayla

VOB is MPEG2, Almost everyone on the pro level uses VOB, but if you want to save HDD space you can convert to a MPEG2 to a lower bit rate. Use your eye to decide what bit rate is good enough for your applacation.
Happy hunting, we're all on the look-out for the perfect file.
Let me know if you find it.
Lots of peeps say Divx, I still think VOB.
Sorry I can't help you more, but it's like Coke or Pepsi.

I used to use DivX, it was OK, and by that I mean 'OK'. I now use mpeg1 at a high bit rate and it's far superior, the sound and video quality is better. Not only that, a lot of high end gfx cards decode mpeg1 natively, mening it's also a fast and efficient file type. Mpeg2 is 'almost' a vob, but the vob carries more information. At the moment I'm very happy with mpeg1 and have had very favourable reports from 'experts' who I have sent samples to.

My average file size comes out around 130 meg per song.

i currently use mpeg2 the file seems to come out really good on the screens at the moment and the audio also comes out perfectly ok aswell but thanks for your observations...

I guess my question is.. my videos already are mpeg4, should i stay or change?
