Topic: E-Mu 1616M or MOTU Ultralite - Which Soundcard is Best?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I'm fed up with the crackly sound of my Firewire Audiophile, and want to purchase a new Soundcard. I know that many people on these forums have experience with both the Ultralite and the 1616M. Say inputs, outputs are not a factor (either should have enough), and neither is price (big difference though).

Which would be better? I wonder if being PCMCIA would have CPU utilization advantages over firewire, although it may not be as flexible...

Basically pristine crackle free sound, and low latency are top priorities...

I tried the EMU, and at about 20 minutes of plaing music the sound would turn to total garbled crap. I just took the card back, so I don't know if it was just a bum card or not. It also could have been my pcmcia card slot, as I've never used it before or since.

Wow... that sucks. I've heard so many good things about the 1616m, but it's a fairly expensive card. I could try an ESI U46DJ, but I just don't get the impression of stellar quality with it. I have such bad luck with soundcards.

In reality, that MOTU card is probably way overkill for me, and I' wouldn't touch it unless I figured I needed it for producing, which I've been too lazy to do anyways.
