I'm sure this is a REALLY basic question, but how do I listen to one one song on my headphones while another song is playing through my laptop's main speakers? Do I need to install a second soundcard? Thx.

Yes a second sound card.

I have an older ASUS U52F laptop (probably 6 yrs old) and I'm wondering if I need to install a second sound card in it in order to play one song from the main speakers, and a separate second song on the headphones? I called a local computer store to inquire about a second card and they thought I was crazy -- they said you CAN'T install a second sound card on a laptop. Any advice?

.....and they'd be right. A laptop is a self contained, sealed thing. It's not designed to be opened up and modified.
A desktop or tower PC on the other hand is usually designed with a case that's easy to open, and the motherboard will have expansion slots for things to be added or changed. A sound card is just that - a card, designed to slot into the expansion slot of a desktop motherboard. Laptops don't have that facility, so you can't install a card.
What you can do on a laptop though, is use an external USB audio interface. Ones designed for DJ use usually have two stereo channels - one for main output and the other for cueing. Or alternatively one for each deck (to be used with an external mixer).
It's always best to use a single interface designed for the job, rather than mix and match two different ones.
