Forum: General Discussion

Topic: Do you have a DJ website, or design DJ websites?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I do, and it's absolutely shocking!! Do any of you have your own website, and if so, how did you make it? I have tried WIX, but would like a custom job if possible. The idea is to embed stuff from facebook, soundclud, twitter, youtube etc, as well as hosting my own mp3 mixes. I have a host I'm really happy with ;-) but need help with getting a decent page up and running?

My recommendation would be to install Wordpress.

There are a huge number of very stylish ready made templates available. Many are free, and premium ones can be bought.

Even pros use Wordpress, and once I'd tried it I quickly realised why. It's really easy to get a great looking site up and running without needing to be a coding genius.

If you can handle writing a skin then I'm sure Wordpress would be within your capabilities.

It's designed to be installed and run online from your web site, but it can also be run locally - which is what I did. It involves using some other software to emulate a web server, then installing Wordpress "inside" that virtual environment. You can then create your site, test it, tweak it, then upload it when you're happy with it.

you can begin to create a blog on your home page (vdj)

I use joomla for my site but Wordpress would work well too for a blog style.

Wordpress has loads of plugins that can be used to integrate social media feeds.

Wordpress isn't restricted to blogs. There are all types of site templates, and even the ones which do have blog parts usually allow it to be turned off.

Thought wordpress was expensive?

It doesn't cost anything. You can spend money, on premium themes and so on, but you don't have to.

About to practice but I thought I would answer this since I am in the mist of building my site and want as few expensive mistakes as possible.

I would highly suggest Wordpress and a nice looking template that fits your style/business. You can find free templates but premium templates don't have to be expensive even if some of them are.

Most run under $50, with many nice once around $20-$30.

I highly suggest you get banners made though and depending how serious you are a logo. Branding is important, look at any major product or service, they have branding and style guide.

I don't have any content yet and that's why I only have a countdown page up now. But I hope to get that solved by year's end or maybe before that as I would really like to get some holiday gigs and having my home on the net is key to that, especially if you using Gig Salad or Thumbtack for gigs.

I just pay about 5 bucks or less a month using Go Daddy. Its very easy to update when needed and with all the templates, all one really has to do is fill in the blanks.

I did however color correct all the images and what not to keep it uniformed and presentable within the color scheme

I built mine at the beginning of this year with GoDaddy. Cost is very low, easy to update. It has my facebook page and twitter account displayed on the front page. There are YouTube vids in a couple of pages as well as a special YouTube Channel Wall I created. Also Mixcloud integration on one of the pages too.

Check it out for ideas, etc.

Just what I needed, loads of ideas and suggestions! I will investigate Workpress first, I think :-)

Re: Blogs - Is that just like public emails? Sorry to be so ignorant, but if you don't ask.... I do need something thats quick to update as I have zero free time ;-)
(skinning doesn't count!!)

Wordpress is not what I'm after; if you want it free then there are very limited features and ADS on your page :-(

No no, you don't want wordpress.com - you want wordpress.org!

The dot com site is a hosted thing for people who just want a quick site and can't be bothered with the "behind the scenes" stuff.

The org site is where you download and install the actual Wordpress software, get free themes, plugins etc.

@Rob
You might check you site control panel it might be just the click of a button to get a ad free Wordpress installed on your existing web space. 1and1 the provider I use has the option yours may as well. If not you account will need a database plus php support none of that should be an issue but if you don't have them it won't work. Good luck

I'm with 1&1 - result! I will check it out.... If not, then Wordpress.org :-)
