Topic: New To Virtual DJ

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi everyone. My first post.

I recently sold my turntables as vinyl was getting too expensive for me.

I have looked at Virtual DJ and it seems a great product. I have a question. I ahve looked at the many videos on YouTube which show VDJ in action. Many of those using it also have external mixers.

Will i also need to purchase one of these in order to use VDJ? Why do people have this external setup?

Thanks for any help

Your best bet is to look at the Hardware section on here (http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html) and see if any of them take your fancy.

This can also act as a cheaper way in to getting VDJ Pro as many, such as the Hercules RMX, allow you to upgrade to Pro at a discount. Either way you will get a Limited Edition version with the console included with the price!

It's a shame you sold your turntables before checking here first as there are ways you could have upgraded to VDJ and retained your turntables - TimeCoded Vinyl. However not all is lost.

Welcome aboard and I hope you find what you need from both the software and this communuty.

welcome manicone, vdj is quite easily controllable with a mouse and your keyboard in the beginning, but for convenience and a lot more controllability after a while you will probably want to upgrade. now what you want will depend mostly on your budget and then what you want to do with your new controller.

a lot of the guys opted for the rmx, it is a middle of the road controller with quite a few functions on it but the price is acceptable for what it can do.

hope that helps.

Thanks Roy and Tayla for the info.

I guess i'll need the external hardware afterall. Will this allow me to preview the next track coming in when im mixing? Just like listening to the second track through my headphones when using a turntable setup. Or will i need to buy a soundcard so i can preview the tune?

Sorry for all the questions but im juts trying to get as much info as i can before buying.

If you could list all the hardware i need that would be great

Thanks

ok if you are not a scratch dj the rmx should be quite ok for you, it has built in sound cards so no need to make a seperate purchase of those. price i think now is around £280 to buy, only unit i know that has gone up in price since it's original release date. lol.

look at the different controllers available first in the price range you have set yourself before committing to one, maybe best with a trip round your local dj suppliers to check them out first.

the rmx will connect straight to an amp but consider buying a 3 - 4 channel mixer if you haven't already got one to put in between it so you can add a back up sound source just in case anything goes wrong with the lappy.

No im not a scratch dj

Could i connect the controller to my laptop, then laptop to my Technics hi-fi?

When i had my turntables i had the mixer hooked up to the hifi so the music came from the hi-fi speakers.

The RMX looks ok. Not a bad price either. However its sold out on the VDJ website page.
Amazon sell it for £268

Cheers

To be able to PFL you will need a multi channel sound (4.1, 5.1 etc.) card. The RMX has one and is pre-configured so that you can do exactly that. Most laptop sound cards are not multi-channel and therefore you will need an external soundcard.

So you have multiple options. By a controller like the RMX with the soundcard built in or buy seperates. There are loads to choose from.

I gave the link above for the hardware page here on this site. We can't do all the work for you you know ;-)

There are a huge number of MIDI/HID controllers out there now which will work with VDJ. I personally use the RMX. I came a from a vinyl background many moons ago and virtually skipped the whole CD era with professional and family commitments. The RMX works great for me and I use it both mobile and in clubs.

You will need to get hands on. Find a local retailer that sells this kind of equitpment and get hands on. You may prefer the Denon 3700 with the vinyl platter - but the price tag is quite high. It all depends what you are going to be using it for too...

Do your research and you won't be dissappointed. Look for a quick solution/fix and you'll end up spending too much time complaining or trying to get your setup to work.

We are here to help and advise, not recommend as are tastes are all different and specific to our own needs.

Correct setup would be: Laptop --> RMX --> HiFi as the soundcard is in the RMX. This is the first mistake people make and try to hook the laptop to the HiFi/Amp!

Your HiFi has an amp in it. So yes. You can treat the RMX as your "mixer" as it has a crossfadrer and can differentiate bewteen the two decks.

That's a good price for a new one right now. I'd get it...

Then take a look at the upgrade price from the LE version of VDJ that comes with the RMX.

Thanks Roy. You've been a great help. I'll look into the RMX

I've been to Belfast a couple of times - Riverside Tower and a few other places many years ago (can't remember now).

Have always found the people friendly and easy to get on with.

Though VDJ does a great job at fading and mixing, most working DJ's have multiple mics and backup hardware that they are connecting and disconnecting all the time..

For those people an external mixer makes more sense.. And honestly.. many of us get used to a certain way of doing things and going 100% digital is either very expensive or ackward feeling.. :-)

I live about an hour from Belfast. Im having my stag do there March. I have been saving for my wedding and so im looking to get into using VDJ as a way of rewarding all my hard saving and letting off some stress lol!!!!!

Is this the Hercules RMX that you are talking about?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hercules-4780474-DJ-Console-RMX/dp/B0012GS2T2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1261065115&sr=8-1

It states - included software - VirtualDJ 5 DJC Edition, PC / Mac version

Would this get me up and running.
Im running a lapotp with 3 gig RAM and a dual core processor so my laptop would be powerful enough i guess. Although it does run Windows 7

So getting the RMX and using it with my current laptop and hi-fi would be OK?

Maybe in a few months time i can upgrade to the lastest VDJ software.

Thanks for any help
