The DJing community and the greater dance music scene mourns the loss of a clubbing staple today. No, Steve Aoki hasn’t hung up his record bag, but rather news has emerged that iconic turntable manufacturers Technics will be stopping production on their universally loved Technics 1200s and Technics 1210s.
In a statement re-posted on dance board Global Hardstyle, the company behind the production of the Technics turntables Panasonic announced that they would cease the manufacture of Tehcnics turntables in February next year, citing an increasing decline in sales as the motivation behind the line’s demise.
The Australian arm of Panasonic issued a similar statement today, expressing their disappointment that the brand’s 35 years-and-running legacy was to be put to bed.
“It is a sad day today but due to low sales globally in analogue turntables a decision to stop production has been made on Technics Turntables,” Panasonic spokesman Ian North explained. “For Australia this means we will receive our last shipment in March.”
With the disappearance of Technics decks now imminent it’s becoming increasingly clear that the digital juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing down. We’ve already heard from trance icon Tiesto how he’s abandoned the ‘outdated’ medium in favour and gone for the ease and accessibility of digital tune libraries. Indeed, the new (and might we just say super-sexy) CDJ-2000s from Pioneer look to be making things easier than ever before with USB stick functionality, employed just last weekend by another digital convert Sasha.
Whilst we’re sure the classic Technics turntables will live on in the hearts of many club-reverent folk out there – not to mention in more than a few purist clubs – it’s still a crushing blow to lose the decks, and if nobody minds, we’ll be bringing beer o’clock around early this Friday afternoon.

It's a very sad day for sure!!!!!!!
I still love my 1210 mk2's. They are a pleasure to use

That's what happens when you make a product that lasts forever lol They were built like a tank. Open the museum doors gang!

I might have to dust mine off now...lol..give em a whirl for old times sake....This has been coming for a while. How many threads have we seen tables VS. controllers? It was only a matter of time. 35 years is an outstanding run for any product....

35 years because they were so well made, I was disappointed with all the versions made after the mk 2 though.
Maybe now Technics will make a Media Player for us to scratch on.

Technic's sales dropped because too many people buy them used. These tables are built tough and they last a life time. I have owned 6 pairs and all were used. Back in the 90s, some djs were selling their 1200s to buy the denon 2500 dual cd player. Then came the pioneer cdj tables with the closest scratch feel from a cd turntable. Now its controllers but many are still using their excisting equipment to dj. cartridge & needle companies are still going strong and wont be leaving for a while.

Even though it's been years since I last touched vinyl, this still makes me a bit sad...and I think it's a bit stupid too, but I guess the accounting boys know better. Damn the pencil pusher, they have no understanding for the legacy this product has :(
Anyway, I guess it's end of an era. It doesn't affect my day to day life in any way, but I bet all the purists and scratch maniacs are already greasing the rope.

This just in...Stanton, Numark, Gemini, Vestax, American DJ & others have started making DJ Turntables! The world will continue turning gang! At 33/45 or 78 your choice!
Although I remember when I bought a used pair of Technics 1200's for $800 CDN with Clydedale cases included & sold them for oveer double what I paid years later. Can't pull that off with many other products.

Probably the most reliable djing gadget ever made. Thanks for countless hours of fun.
Posted Fri 27 Nov 09 @ 1:21 pm
They weren't gadgets at all, they were our tools, they were our tools of our trade for many years.
Too many DJ's are gadget geeks now, a lot of there systems have no substance.
You don't see tech's in booths in England anymore or anywhere in the middle east either, I was wondering a few months ago where they had all gone.

They were great at what they did, I have been doing something different since 1990. Don't get me wrong, I would not even consider working in your club if you did not have 1200's. However, that was a long time ago, and I have moved on. The truth of the matter is, there have been other turntables on the market, for quite some time, that have been just as good (I have never used them, but I am old school). I realized that it's not the tool (I was a DJ before 1200's), but your skill and innovation level that sets you apart. There are plenty of 1200 users, that can't mix two eggs in a bowl, with an electric egg beater. We have come a long way from surgery with a piece of wood in your mouth. We can safely put you to sleep and you won't remember a thing. It's time to move forward, and vinyl is not the future.

I would still like a 100% confirmation again on this topic as its a rumor that comes up every year for the past 2 decades.
What kills me is that every single controller on the market has been trying to dupilicate the control and feel of vinyl forever. I still don think there is a 100% perfect controller out there that does that. So to say the controllers are the future is one thing but if they can't duplicate the feel and control that vinyl dj's want (and many of them still out there) then to kill vinyl and turntables is leaving a gap that should have been filled my now.
I think if 1200's do stop being produced other compaines will pick up the slack. Vinyl cannot die until its users are too old to care and in their 70's... we are not that old yet.
It's not just a piece of equipment and a format but a lifestyle and art form.

Listen 2, just stop it right now. Get a box of tissue, and dry your eyes. If you don't take that rope from around your neck, I will kick that stool from under you right now. I am a lot closer to 70 than you are (57 and counting), and can tell you, whether the story is true or not does not matter. People like you and I don't matter any more, we are a minority. The vast majority of people in the world, and the ones that have not been born, do not know what vinyl is. How many more 1200's can they sell, if the ones I have are over 25 years old and still work. They don't make 57 Chevys any more, even though there are still a bunch of them on the road. When was the last time you went to a drive in? Do you still have the 100 pound CRT monitor, or a 5 pound 22inch, 1020p HDMI LCD monitor? Did you say art form? Who is painting Mona Lisas these days? Let's take a look at what we play. I don't know about you, but most of the music I play, sounds like, (how can I say this), SHIT. If I am still around in ten years, my granddaughter who is four will laugh when I say, "Let me show you how I use to mix". Mix what Pop Pop? See you at the Smithsonian. Bring tissue.

Let me go change my shoes, because I can see I'm going to be kicking a lot of stools from under a lot of DJs.
OK I'm back, who's first? Wait, I have a bench, so I can do three of you at a time. See how technology works, from a stool to a bench.
