Topic: Im Getting Very Annoyed With VDj....sigh someone please help me!!!!

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

hi guys ive searched and searched the forum but have yet to find the answer i am looking for....

ive been using Virtual Dj for some time now and i just cant figure out how to cue up my next track in my headphones without it playing through my speakers.

i have a 7.1 soundcard and have my headphones set up to play via the centre speaker output.

now then, i have read several articles about having 2 sound cards. is it actually necessary to have 2 sound cards to be able to cue 1 track in the head phones and have one track playing?

or is there a setup i can use so i can cue up via a single 7.1 soundcard?

i have no attached hardware yet as i am more of a bedroom dj and just play the odd party and broadcast a lot to my friends. though i am planning to expand soon.

i just hope someone out there has a real answer for me and i dont get a bunch of try everything and get no where answers.

Just follow it through logically :)

You only need a 4.1 capable card. You have to map the channels correctly in VDJ, and IIRC you'll only have the options of the headphones being on the front or rear outputs, not the center.

In sound setup:

Inputs: None
Outputs: Headphones

Then either (this first one is probably more appropriate to you as you're not using pro-grade hardware):

Sound Card(s): 4.1 Card
Sound Card: Select your sound card
Output Channels: Select the relevant output setup

Or if your card is slightly better:

Sound Card(s): ASIO Driver
ASIO Driver: Select your sound card
Output Channels: Select the relevant output setup

first things first, if you've been using vdj for awhile now then you must register your serial number to become a professional edition user. Secondly, you are going to need an external soundcard to cue up a track through your headphones. You will find that an external soundcard will solve your problems in many different ways. You can config vdj so that the soundcard is used to play the track that is playing and your computers soundcard for cueing up the next track. Or, you can connect to an external mixer and cue tracks like that. Good luck and please register your version of vdj.

@ SBDJ

ok first thing, i have a 7.1 soundcard and yes it does give the option to have my headphones use the center speaker output.

http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr8/bluilte/config.jpg

i have no problem listening to the track/s via the head phones. however what i want to do it to listen to a single track on the headphones and be able to switch between

deck one
deck two
both

what i want is to know if i need an second sound card to do this? i have nessed about with the config and all the buttons on the skin. i just cant work it out.

please could i get an answer that doesnt include how to set up the config. i just need an answer on the can i switch between what im listening to in the headphones without a secondary sound card?

sorry if this sound naughty but im just frustrated.lol.

thanks for four quick reply though 10 out of 10 for responce.

@DJRyan0924

so i deffo need 2 soundcards to be able to make the switch between 1, 2 or both. theres no way i can do this without 2 sound cards.

No you don't need 2 soundcards ..

Do you understand how to use PFL and the CUE/Mix features? If not, I suggest you look through the manual as a start to understand the appropriate Config settings, the PFL buttons and the CUE-MIX option. Also suggest you use the Internal Mixer or Full Video skins when looking at the options.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were asking. I thought you were having trouble setting it up not operating it.

As cstoll says, you want to use the PFL function and level faders. The skin choice is critical as not all have the controls/view you need to be able to get started.

ok thanks guys i will goggle at the manual and see what i can learn.

@cstoll, i only uuse the internal mixer interface any way 99.9% of the time and on the very odd occasion, one of the pioneer skins just for a change.

thanks to all you guys who helped i will post again on here if i have troubles with the PFL/Cue situation.

which btw, i had always wondered what the PFL was for. but hey no matter, its not like im playing in clubs. i just want to get more out of my software and be a better Dj.

YEY! party over here!

guys ive sussed it out and i appreciate all your help and all your comments. im amaized as to how very simple the solution is and just for you guys who are stuck with this too, heres the problem solver.

ok so to start i use the internal mixer interface so if you use something else then get the internal mixer out so you can see what im talking about then adapt it to your own skin.

next follow the setup procedure as described above by SBDJ.

then you have 2 choices

1. hit the PFL button each time you load your next track to listen to it via your headphones.
2. goto config > options, and you will find " auto headphones " . in the selection box you have Always, Disable and On Load. if you select on load your phones will automatically switch to the deck you are loading to.

now im still playing around with this so i suggest you do the same and see whats best for you.

ok so now you have youre head phones set up and your track loading into the headphones. YES! good.

the next thing you need to know is how to either

1. llisten to each track individually
2. listen to your mix.

the way to do this is to use the cue/mix slider at the top of the skin.

if you slide the slider all the way to CUE then you can listen to each track individually. and swap between the two using your PFL button.

if you want to listen to the mix (both decks at once) then you slide the slider all the way to MIX.

by playing around with these controlls you will be able to decide upon whats best FOR YOU.

i know this will help out a lot of people and i will at some point write a proper guide for headphone usage and maybe just maybe we can get a sticky. unless someone beats me to it, which i dont mind seeing as it would save me time. lol.

hope this helps someone, keep the beat alive and happy mixing.
