Topic: Only one speaker has sound

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I plugged my regular speakers/headphones into the 1/4" output 1 (with an adapter) on my Hercules Rmx. However, sound only seems to go to the left ear or left speaker and not the right one. How do I get it to use both speakers?

I tried getting a 1/4" (f) to 2 x 1/4" (m) to split up and put into both input 1 and 2, but it still didn't work.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Is the fader on the software, in the middle? What about the volume control on the interface?

Yes, and the volume control is fine as well.

When I just use the console as a sound card for my regular computer sounds, only one ear plays as well. Is this normal or should I return this thing real quick?

If the fader is in the middle, try moving it all the way to the left or right to see if the problem still happens. Double check the balance knob, to make sure it's in the center. Then, check all the connections, and if they're correct try new cables. If none of this helps, try using the Simple output with your built-in audio device to make sure it's not a problem with VDJ. If you get both channels with the simple output option, it's possible you narrowed it down to the RMX.

I don“t know how it looks whit the rmx but for the mk2 you have a small icon in the notification area that looks like a record. Click on this and you opens the sound options. Look there if the volumes are ok.

have you tried re adjusting the monitor select, found top right hand corner of the unit, second left from the headphone jack. use this socket only for headphones, there are out puts at the back of the unit for your speakers please use those which are then controlled by your sliders

Thanks for all the responses.

@tayla:
I'm not so much worried about the headphones slot. It works fine, and i hear output from my headphones in both ears when I connect it to the headphones slot. The problem is that the outputs in the back for the speakers only play the left speaker instead of both speakers like I want it to. Is it because I have consumer-grade speakers? I'm new to this, so do higher-end speakers have 2 output jacks that go to Right and Left, for example?

@Jenson:
The volumes are all fine here.

@HiTower:
Thanks for the lengthy response. I've tried all the slider stuff. It's not a problem with VDJ because when I play, say, itunes songs using the rmx as a sound card, it still only plays from the left speaker. I unplug rmx and use the built-in soundcard and both speakers work again, even in VDJ.

I guess unless it's some problem with my connections (the cables are all brand new, btw) the problem is with the rmx itself. Anyone else had this happen to them before, or any other ideas? Thanks all.

yangez

have you checked rmx pop up window for balance

Yes, I've checked all of the above and it still isn't working right. When attached to the Input 1 at the back, it only plays out of the left speaker. When I drag balance all the way to the right in the rmx popup window, there's no sound at all.

Is this a hardware problem, and if so how can I get it fixed?

are you using an amp between the rmx and speakers or a mixer, or going directly from rmx to speakers. could you try this.... config > sound set up

SOUND SET UP

inputs > none

outputs > headphones

soundcard > dj console - rmx

apply eq on external inputs (tick box if not already activated)

output channels : Master: Chan 1&2 / Headphones : Chan 3&4

"I plugged my regular speakers/headphones" So which is it? Speakers or phones?

If you are plugging a TRS 1/4 into the 1/4 output on the back of the RMX you are plugging into a mono output and will only hear one channel.
TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) is a stereo connection and the RMX has two 1/4 mono outputs on the back marked 1/2 as main and 3/4 as monitor.

I would not connect my phones to that rear jack

Ah so that's probably it. I was plugging my consumer-grade speakers with one stereo connector with a 1/4 adapter into the 1/4 output on t he back of the RMX. I assume there is an adapter, then, to connect a TRS male into 2 mono females and get stereo sound? Correct me if I'm way off base here.

A trip to Radio Shack should fix this up.
Just tell them you want to take two mono 1/4" males and convert them to one 1/8" stereo female.
From there you can plug in your speakers.

Excellent! Thanks a lot, man.
