I'm finding (espsecially with this new update 5.1) I'm havin to adjust my gains and Eq on my mixer alot more than I used to, now I'm not moaning but I'm getting abit tried of tweaking the sound all the time.
Now I've read somewhere that mp3gain is good software to use to normalize everything with not having to reset Cue points and rescan.
Is this right?

I've only tested it on a 20 or so tracks but it seems to work pretty well. I haven't noticed it causing any issues in sound quality.

Good, what about Cue points mate? Gone or still there.
Posted Thu 03 Jul 08 @ 2:21 pm
I don't know about that, I don't set cue points.
Test on just a few tracks first like I have been doing. I haven't had time to really get after the software but it seems lovely so far.

I've decided to give it a try tomorrow, and that's what I'm going to do, is to test it on a batch of 10 tracks, all with Cue points and see what happens.

Used it for years and still am. It does NOT alter your data in the mp3. mp3s are full of frames, each frame has variable options that are editable, one is the volume. mp3Gain only modifies the volume in each frame unlike normalizing, this can be reversed. The program does NOT affect your cuepoints or anything else.
It can't do anything with videos though.

Thanks soulman, might have to give you a shout if I get stuck with it mate :)

Little tip;
I have a tendancy to set it for 94db for modern music, but, anything pre-1990s I tend to set at 96db. Evens out the volume between old recordings and new a bit better.

Don't suppose anyone's found something that does? Could do with something to batch run through videos and make them all the same level.

Depends what format the audio of your videos are in. As long as your audio is MP3 or AAC, it would be easy to throw together something which will demux the video to a temporary destination, normalize the audio, remux them and replace the original file.

All MP3Gain effects is the output of the file Not the .xml data that VirtualDJ uses. I use it all the time, especially on my house music file, with great success. Use it with no worries Jimmy...I hope that helps....

Cool, cheers matt, that's what I mostly play and alot of the older tracks seem to be my I say "recorded" at a slightly lower level than the moderner stuff. For example with my setups I play on, all the Freemasons stuff including there remixes seem loud and all the soulful house is alot more chilled if you know what I mean.

It's not so much that the music was recorded at a lower level as much as compression is being used all the time now. (Not to be confused with file compression to save space.)

"Easy to throw something together" lol easy for who?
I have around 4000 video files in mpeg1, some have layer two audio, some have layer three. Would love to be able to just point a program at the drive and leave it overnight, come back the next morning and all the audio is the same level.

I am using MP3 gain for a while. Have 12.000 MP3 files run through it. Now all at 90 db., that assures no clipping.
Now when I rip a cd I run MP3gain and then put them in VDJ.
I have disabled autogain in VDJ options and i do not have to adjust the volume constantlly as before.
Settings MP3 gain
Target normal volume op 90 dB.
Add subfolder
Preserve file date/time
No check layer I or II
Don’t clip when doing Track gain
regrds,
freek

I would be able to throw something together but I don't know of any program that will losslessly adjust MP2 audio. If you can find a CLI (command line interface) program that does it, I can write something and post it back. However, I only know of mp3gain and aacgain which will only work for MP3 and AAC files. MP2, OGG and AC3 would all result in reconversion.

Well lads, I did a test batch of 20 and they went fine, so I've decide to start on my folder's,
It's taken 2 hours to do 2 folders worth, Got 6 more folders to go, It's all looking promising so far.
......................Damn where did all these tracks come from, lol

I just need to say thanks to the guys for all your advice on this, didn't have time to do all my folders, before I did my gig last night, but the two folders I used with the mp3gain adjustment were bang on. Didn't have to worry about anything, just mixed.
I always used Always+Remember and I thought VirtualDJ was good at the Gains on tracks, but it has no patch on this software.
Couldn't believe how many of my tracks were clipping, Should of made the decision to use this software early, just finishing of my last folder now.
Cheer's guys.

One thing that I've just noticed and abit concerned about is that, I've just started to defrag my external harddrive, after the mp3gain process and it's all red, indicating fragmented files, I just hope all these will be put right after the defrag.
