To quote from another forum:
"Efx-1000/efx 500

I think the main thing that the Pioneer line has is quality and simplicity.
The EFX-500 is dope. If it wasn't then Z, Shadow, and Cut Chemist probally wouldn't use it.
I've been using the 500 for about 4 years. And I've been pretty happy with it. Some of the effects are wack and I don't use much. But all in all its a really solid machine.
Its shining strength is the ability to do echos/delay in time with the music.
After about a year of obsessing I finally broke down and got the EFX-1000.
Is it worth all that dough?
Well first off. I found a place on Froogle that had it for $699 which is about $100 less than what most people sell it for and $300 below the MSRP.
I was surprised when it came out of the box that it is really clunky compared to the EFX-500. Its about 30%-40% bigger.
The only feature that I miss from the 500 is the "Fuzz" or distortion effect.
That fuzz can make some nice dirty sounds.
The best new things about the 1000 (in my opinion) are:
It's higher quality (Especially a big deal if your mixer doesn't have an FX send)
Also the character knob is really useful. (It can make the echo sound much warmer)
Pitch Echo Effect is pretty cool as well.
The routing switch is also useful.
Overall the 1000 offers much more control with out sacrificing its simplicity.
Most of the other new effects aren't that great. The Vocoder is sadly pretty whack.
The EFX-1000 does NOT have sampling capabilities. However the sample times for the echo loops are greatly increased. So you can kind of use it as a sampler. (there is a demo of this on their website).
The 500 is still a viable tool (especially if you don't wanna plop down $700-$800).
And the transition between the two is pretty seemless if you decide to upgrade later."
The Korg Kaoss pad is less popular but has sampling capabilitys.
Ideally try both.
