Topic: Starting out need some advice

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hey guys I've been interested in DJing for a while now and I've been trying to do as much research as I can before I drop 2 grand on junk. I've already decided to use VDJ/Cue but I'm concerned as far as hardware goes.

The first thing I want to address is the mixer and controller. I've been looking at the Numark professional DJ in a box and I wanted some opinions on it. I have heard good things about the DMC2 controller it comes with but I know nothing of the mixer. Also, I looked up the difference between Numark Cue and VDJ but besides the distribution of the software is there any other difference? Finally, once I buy the software are the updates all given to me as they come along or must I purchase it over again once version 6.0 decides to roll into town.

Secondly, I have no laptop right now and I need to choose between a PC and a Mac. I seached around the forum and there seems to be a big debate about it but hopefully my budget can solve this for me. I cant drop much more than 1000 dollars on the laptop which means if I go Mac I have to get a Macbook not a Powerbook. Also, if I decide to go pc I don't want my software going blue screen of death on me in the middle of a gig so hows the reliability of VDJ on a PC vs Mac. I'd also like to know what kind of specs I should be looking for in a lap top when I get one.

The last concern I have are the speakers I plan on getting. I've been looking around reading reviews and stuff on speakers but I'm still confused on what I should get. I dont want to drop too much on speakers and the Behringer Eurolive B212A (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-EUROLIVE-B212A-Active-2Way-Loudspeaker?sku=600735) looks pretty good to me. Does anyone have any experience with these and if these are bad what speakers should I buy.

Thanks for your help and hello. :]

Hi Jammrcandyman.

VDJ and Numark Que are the same software. All the difference is that the Que skins looks different than VDJ skins,( I think the Que skins look better). Then there is Numark Virtual Vinyl, which is one complete package. which includes The Que software, a soundcard ( it is very good I might add ) and Timecoded CD's and Timecoded Vinyl. These two pieces allow you to play your mp3's though CD players and Turntables.

The Updates for Both pieces of Software are free and as far as I know will remain free. But the Que updates often come out at a slightly later date than the VDJ do.

I use A Mid range Toshiba Laptop with VDJ, at first I had a few teething problems, but now I know what I'm doin and it's set up right it works fine. Many of the video guys use these new shuttle PCs as they are easy to upgrade than Laptops As for Mac's I can't really say, but I know they are have slight problems with the new Rev 6 on the Macs.

Hope this helps

Sorry to say, but your post exceeded the limit by two words, for a new comer, and will be deleted.

Now to the serious stuff. I don't know what is in the DJ in a box, so I can't comment. But I do own a DMC2, and love it. We have a guy here that has provided a mapper for it, that takes it to the next level, which means way up there. I use a desktop, and it works great. The only difference is the Numark name on it, otherwise, it's the same. All updates have been free, and they come fast. he MAC version is not ready for prime-time yet, but we have midgets working on that 24/7. You should get the fastest processor you can afford, and then get the next one higher. Two gig of ram, a video card with 256mb of dedicated memory. There are a number of audio interfaces available. Hope this helps you out. As for the speakers, I am biased against Behringer because I think they are a value based company. I have learned to buy what I Want, not what I can afford. By the way, the only time I have seen a blue screen of death, is when I forgot to connect my monitor, and then hooked it up. My desktop was on my second output, but I had not put on the TVs yet, and it took me five minutes before I figure it out.

Are you from the UK? if so I can sell you some better equipment than the stuff you listed.

The Numark DJ-In-A-Box is where I started... But I felt compelled to upgrade within the first year of ownership. (Mostly due to how much I enjoyed DJing and the life that goes with)

Were an excellent starting ground for the world of DJing for me, but it worked out nicely that one of my friends wanted to start DJing, so I sold him my equipment :P

If you want good speakers that wont break your wallet. Check out Carvin.com I owned a pair of JBL eons for a while and sold them to by the Carvins. They sound better and have more bass and handle more watts. The speakers are cheaper in price because they sell factory direct to the consumer than using a store like sam ash or guitar center to sell for them

Thanks for the help guys I'll be checking out the carvin website.

And I'm from Los Angeles.

I have the Behringers 212A they work great for small parties under 100 people. Even better with a subwoofer. At some point you will probably want to upgrade but they are great starter speakers to help you make more money. I like mines a lot but i'm just scared to blow them since they are still new. But that would be the case with any speaker.
