Topic: virtual dj scratch mixing beatjuggling VIDEO SHOWCASE

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Ive composed a short video showcasing the potential of dj controllers using virtual dj & the Ion i cue .I wanted to focus on the stability & precision of the software when performing live tricks using the jog wheels like a regular turntable.

verdict...

I think the software needs an option to regulate the jog wheel range & also the alter sound frame resolution to compensate, as many jog wheels do not share the same characteristics. .... This is the main reason why i couldn't perform fast accurate scratching.

Many people have emailed me in response to this video. It seems many people do not realize that you need 4
outputs for mixing & cueing in stereo but most entry users will only have a 2 channel audio card & minimal technical knowledge.

But you could mix and monitor in mono...

Id like to see an audition mode enabling you to split a stereo channel into two signals then beginners can use one channel for monitoring and the other for mixing when routed to an external mixer.

Looks like a cut down version of the Total Control.

Video is well put together but can't read the text at times.

Nice socks BTW...

Cool demo of the Ion controller, but reason its not good for scratch, is that the jogwheels arent touchsensitive.. Like a turntable vinyl, CDJ cd player or better midi controller are.

Check out some youtube videos for Vestax VCI-100 and you will see the difference between the Ion jogs, and real scrach jogs on a midi controller :)

also bear in mind the icue is a budget , cut back version of the total control and is of a lower quality

intended for smaller events and home parties.

I think the Vestax VCI-100 is the best controler for scratchin and beatjuggling !! See the video :o)

I didnt realise my vid was directly available in the forum i think you may need to observe the original vid & the additional comments on youtube for clarity as im focusing on jog wheels, and how vdj/ cue software interprets, tracks the data. but i think ill try using a midi filter.

Emu 0404 2ms latency
P4 3GHZ
Geforce mx4000
1.5gb ram
virtual dj
Total control
Technics SLDZ1200

i like the music in the first vid and the back and forth sample looping, but the timing and latency response is horrible.

the second vid demonstrating vestax controller is nice. the latency is very good but not great, meaning you could do alot of more than basic scratches like chirps, flares, crabs, jabs, transform, fades, but not any aggressive fader n controller action like triple click orbitals or 2 click flare chirps. overall the vestax does seem to impress a turntable techy like me, i could only wish the jog wheels are motorized in sync like that new denon i been hearing about.

For a turntablist a midi controller dont stand much chance ;) Timecode would be better...

There are some hybrid midi decks that do alright, such as the comming Denons and the new Pioneer CDJ 400, but only the Denon got spinning platter though..

Here is a video of the hybrid midi / cd player from Pioneer, here in midi mode with software :

I think the point is nothing beats the real thing but for what it was worth i think that video shows what can be done with controllers. It's a good example because depending on how one would use it, it shows the pros/cons.

Good use of the skin ;)

yeah...

Shows the use of the iCue controller.. and its pro/cons. Good vid :)

I reckon the cdj market will decline as soon as a decent robust controller & stable software emerges at the right price .
A similar situation occured in the late 1990s when it became cheaper to use vst dx synth & sampler software & simple midi controllers over hardware & companies like Akai which dominated the sampler market lost out.

Just look at the options available to a beginner which the market needs & disregard the vinyl, cd dj culture aesthetic debate...

You can buy a dj controller & a pc laptop for around the same price as a single pro cdj deck.Or a mac & dj controller for the price of two pro cdj decks & a mixer. Theres not much incentive apart from personal preferences to buy a pro cdj . I remember when the cdj was touted as the natural step up from turntables but not now with timecoded vinyl & software , Now I also own technics cdjs & still have to contend with unresolved audio issues. Do technics expect my loyalty to upgrade or buy again ? No way, cdjs are ultimately destined for extinction as they need a new user base. My cdjs have been reduced to functioning as an expensive jog wheel using timecoded cds until the right dj controller emerges, as the market is up for grabs.

I anticipate Apple, Microsoft ,Sony to introduce something..

There an infinite choice of sounds but i'm still hearing kyaaa & fresh................................. its a conspiracy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
