As a matter of interest, which compontents in a PC effect how far you can push the quality slider, under the performances tab, the most? Is it simply the sound card or does it depend on the overall speed of the PC or both?

Ram , cpu , and sound card quality , but ultimately your computer runs at the speed of its slowest component , so having super fast processor with little ram or having some cheaper parts can bring your pc performance down.
aslo , having alot of poor quality ram is almost as bad as having very little.

Everything matters... See your PC as a persona.. Even two PC's with close to hardware can have different performance.
but top ones that matters is your soundcard and ram.
If the soundcard is good asio card/kernal WDM (and have its own IRQ), and your PC is a fast processor with the recommended ram, you're rockin ;)
Btw, the TOP setting of the slider is only important if you want to use the HIFI master tempo / key lock, one can easily relax the system a bit, by turning the performance slider one step down from highest.
If you scratch with timecode, the scratch quality setting matters, if you dont, you can turn it off, and relax the system even further
