ok - i've had a bit of time to play around with serato now. But, i'm not sure if its worth starting ANOTHER thrread discussing the pro's and con's of each package. Because at the end of the day, it come's down to personal preference. But I will make a quick statement at the end on the main difference between the 2.
1st of all, the purpose of the thread was whether I should get the SL1 soundcard or VV box, as I was currently using the Maya 44. I went for the serato box, I've tested both the soundcards with VDJ.
1) The SL1 box is louder than the Maya 44 (this is noticeable).
2) The SL1 box provides better sound quality. This is noticable when comparing directly with the Maya 44. But would I be able to guess which one was being used (without a direct comparison) - i'm not so sure. Maybe in a club at loud volumes, the difference would be much more noticeabe (but not so in my bedroom).
3) Was it worth buying the Serato package just for the soundcard? NO. But luckily that was not my only reason to buy Serato. I like TCV, so was happy to get the software package aswell.
Comparing SL1 to the VV box box would be interesting (if anyone has both - do share)
And now to Serato vs. VDJ.
I don't think i'm in a position to give a full cost/benefit analysis between the 2 packages, as i'm not an expert on either. But what i will say is that i think TCV on serato is more responsive than it is on VDJ (i have Gen3 TCV and using VDJ 5.5). But i don't think serato TCV is 'much' more responsive.
I'm no turntablist, but for advanced scratching and beatjuggling, Serato is the way to go (don't shoot me). But i'm confident that it is only a matter of time until VDJ is just as good.
A big difference between Serato and VDJ (in my opinion) is the all in one package that Serato comes with. i.e. the soundcard. If VDJ had a soundcard that worked with its software without any tweaking required, together with all the extra stuff VDJ can do (and serato can't) (and the expectation of TCV being as good as serato at some point) - VDJ is also a 1st class package.
I understand the VDJ policy of being able to be used with any soundcard, and it being an open software - which i think is great. But purely from a sales and revenue perspective, there are a lot of people out there who just want 'plug and play'. Serato is more of a plug and play package the VDJ. i.e. it requires about 10 min of reading to set-up. VDJ requires a little bit more.
I know have both - so am content.

i did a similar comparison, but instead of the maya44, it was the emu 1616m. and guess what, vdj won for turntablists. just goes to show its a matter of the gear you use and less the software since both are good

Virtual Vinyl is the all-in-one-box option, with software, tcv/tccd and interface in one package. It works very very well, and is super-responsive. I can scratch, but I'm far from an expert, but still I'm quite confident that there is absolutely no noticable latency. And that guy in the DJ Mag review of VV, he says it's just as good as serato, and that guy CAN scratch. no doubt.

I understand that most of us interested in using sound cards for VDJ or Serato only. But don't forget that Virtual Vinyl sound card works with Numark Cue or VDJ only!!! This is pretty sad for $500 sound card. I can't play even Winamp thru it.

Virtual Soundcard is tracking better then my Serato box at this side... maybe has to do with that there is no grounding on the serato box... dont know..
My virtual vinyl is not tracking backwards normally, see separate post. Dont know what generation it is...it came with software version 4.13r i think..
I got VDJ vinyl on the way, but its still in transit...
Serato feels more responsive, and is more stable, has way less functions...

hm.......
this sounds like a big battle of the soundcards,
i'm just curious, if your looking to only mix and scratch without any negative feedback and less to worry about then get serato, if you want more out of things then i would recommend getting virtual vinyl right?
can anyone answer this general question?
thanks, jc
as for as video as well, which is better? virtual vinyl or serato?

Well if you dont care about efx and other stuff and just want 2 stop dragging along a heavy bag of vinyl or cd's go Serato. If you want more then that you are in the market for VDJ. However you can only run serato with the serato box.. my short list of plus and min Serato vs VDJ.. but there are many posts on this subject and a lot is personal.. like i dont care about video at allll...

If you are going to use vinyl with vdj, i have noticed that the serato box doesnt work as good as the numark box, think it has to do with the grounding which is not avalible on the serato box, cause i cant think of anything else... latency and other performance seem similar. Correct me if i am wrong here... its just my observation. Also i havent got mine setup working properly with vinyl (both with serato and numark box) only with cd...but thats another story and another post...
Video of serato is only in beta form still and on top of that you will have to use the rane 57mixer otherwise it will not work... so if your willing to spend 1500bucks on a mixer to get video working with serato, dont know if there final release will require the mixer, go to there website... to be honest cant really comment on video because i dont use it... vdj seems to be the choice for video when i look at clubs i play... usually running on a different pc, meaning the dj and the vj use there own computers, and the vj just tries to keep the same bpm and mixing point when using video clip of a song...
