Topic: Comments about the M Audio Torque X-Ponent

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi, everyone! I noticed the icon for the torque X-Ponent in the config/remote control tab and I got a bit curious so I tried searching for topics here in the forum regarding this controller but sadly there's none. Anybody out there with any knowledge/experience to share concerning the M Audio Torque X-Ponent would be highly appreciated as I am really interested in this piece of hardware. Thanks!

It's Very expensive and kinda bulky. A lot of guys looked and passed on it I think.

Light, the size of a lap top. Fun to work with. Not that expensive considering that you get the hardware and the software. Working fine for me so far.
Some people are complaining about the waveform display.
I have been djing for more than 20 years without that gizmo.
I guess baby djs need it ! Maybe I will you it when I become totally death or hit by a stroke leaving me with no sense of rhytm !

cheers

Lots of threads on the Xponent and VirtualDJ mate :)

One of the longer ones here:

http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/77360/Hardware_Technical_Support/Xponent.html

The upshot is that most of the controller works - the only thing that doesnt are the progress and VU meters - neither of which bothers me in the slightest. Everything else can be mapped/controlled, and I can add new combos or features to the mapper :)

As for the controller itself, I like it. It's quite big, but then has lots of controls and some large-ish jogs. My only real dislike about the actual hardware is that the pitch faders are too light - a mic input would have been nice too.

My review:
It's so big and ugly, looks like a toy, level led's missing, poor mixer performance. Imagine if you want to carry that thing in the club and try to install it somewhere in to a real DJ booth. Some times you have troubles placing your laptop somewhere never mind that monster. For basement use is perfect; try to keep it locked so nobody can see it, they might get scared :)

Hahaha! I'm laughing my brains out with all of your comments, keep them coming! Virtual DJ forum is where it's at, I must say!

From what I've heard, the Xponent sounds like one of the better options for a controller for VDJ.

Is there a thread that has a comprehensive list of the professional grade controllers available? Off the top of my head, there's the M-Audio Xponent, the Numark Total Control, the Vestax VC1, and the Numark iCDX (which are kind of in a different class, but do this job).

Personally I kinda hate timecode for so many reasons... it just feels like a kludgy workaround (to me) to control a computer. I like having a real HID controller, or MIDI controller so that you can actually use all the capabilites, and accuracy and precision of the software while at the same time still having responsive, low latency tactile control. I just DJ with a keyboard and mouse, and I'm pretty good at it, but no way in hell can you pull of a decent scratch with that setup. I've got my keyboard shortcuts heavily customized and I use lots of looping, stabs, and nudging. Beatmatching is easy enough if VDJ detected the BPM correctly, and the rest is all Mixer fader and EQ manipulation. Unless you've got some tricky tempo-varying stuff you're trying to mix completely by ear, I find keyboard control okay, but there are times when it'd just be easier to grab a damned platter and fix an off mix, or nudge a pitch slider to match an incorrectly detected tempo or something.
