I invested in a Pioneer 909 a year and half ago but have now decided I'd like to incorporate Video. Love the mixer but would have bought the 800 had I been thinking forward. Without going to a midi mixer, I'd like to find the smallest possible solution for an external video crossfader controller. I'm thinking that a simple number keypad would work via shortcuts but it would be great to have something that was a little more crossfader like. I do not understand midi mapping so would like to be able to apply via shortcuts unless there is a midi map available already. I remember Pern was working on a map for the Griffin powermate but I'm not certain he ever got it to work. I don't need the device to do anything but video crossfade.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In my opinion the best mixer with midi-options inside (and great for video-crossfade/-scratching ;o) are the NUO4 and Rane TTM57. The Rane mixer comes also with a soundcard inside ! But it´s very expensive.
Now I´m working with a midi-mixer only for videomixing. But sometimes (in different clubs) it is very difficult to find sufficient space for the controller.
If you keep your mixer, I can recommend you "Faderfox DJ2" http://faderfox.com/html/dj2_product_page.html

Thanks, the faderfox is interesting. I do plan on keeping my mixer and I"m just looking for something small to attach to the mixer that can handle video crossfading. I know about the xsession and other full feature midi controllers but I'm wondering if there is something small and simple that can be mapped, hopefully via shortcuts.

Better is the Xsession Pro ! It looks like a 2 channel mixer. But if you want a small solution i recommend you the Faderfox-Mixer ;o)
If you buy the Xsession Pro I would like to send you my mapper.

You think is possible to link the faderfox-mixer with denon hc4500 for mixing audio and video with native support?

I use the DMC2 crossfader buttons for video fading.
But If you're a scratching kinda guy you might want to get a real midi type mixer

Currently you can't use another MIDI controller if the Denon HC4500 native support is enabled (I think this also applies to other controllers too that use MIDI as their protocol rather than USB HID, e.g: Behringer.)
You could use a Denon mixer with X-control though, but I'm not sure whether the native support will support this or not. I will hopefully support this feature in my mapper, but I won't be able to test it because I do not have a suitable mixer.

I feel funny asking but that metric thing never really took hold in the US. The faderfox dimensions are 180x105x70 mm, what's that in inches.

Ok, I took a moment and figured it out. The Faderfox is small - 7X4 inches. Still a little bigger then I hoped. For example, I have a 3X3 inch touchpad that fits in perfectly on an open spot on the face of the mixer. I have a similar open spot that I'd like to put the video crossfader on.

If the mixer is not midi it can't interact with software like VDJ.

If small is your thing and You don;t scratch videos - why not get a usb keypad and make keyboard shortcuts?

Looks like this thread resurrected itself. So I'll finish the story. I ended up getting a Griffin Powermate and used Pern's mapper. It is a nice, well built, midi knob. $36. It works well to control video crossfader and select transitions and video effects. Cool blue light as well.
