Topic: Crossfader works for audio but not video. . .

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi. Im still getting VDJ to work and only got it today. When the video scratching works, i can scratch the video back and forth with the audio fine, but when i use the crossfader to scratch, the sound cuts in and out but the video doesnt. Im just using a standard Vestax analog scratch mixer. How do i fade inbetween video tracks and scratch them using the fader? Thanks, Ben

Well I'm assuming that your Vestax mixer does not control MIDI commands. To use the Video Crossfader in VDJ you need a controller/mixer that sends MIDI commands to VDJ.

If i had a mixer that did this would the midi only send a control to cut in the video and not the audio? What im asking is, will i still have the analog mixer to control the sound, the only difference is the mixer sends midi to control motion of the video? Would i need a mixer that would send control messages when i move the up and down faders as well?

Thanks for your help. . .

Ben

If you can get a mixer with midi on, or just a midi controller with a crossfader, then you can set it to cut both the video and audio symaltaniuosly. There are various crossfader curves you can set for the audio and even a "scratch" video transition to cut between the videos as you stratch.

If you don't want the added hassle/expense though, I think you can select the "default" video transition (or any other) in the virtual dj skin, then click it to activate it. When you start playing/scratching the next record the video crossfader will move across a bit and the two floating windows will even move back and forward in time with your scratching.

You can also assign some keyboard shortcuts to smoothly crossfade from one deck to another (using the "video_trans" shortcut command, assigning it to deck 2 will make it fade to the right, and assigning it to deck 1 will make it fade to the left).

A couple more keyboard shortcuts to cut straight from one video to the next ("video_crossfade" keyboard command with a value of 0 for the left deck and 4096 for the right deck) and that should be enough to get you started.

Obviously though, it takes a bit of getting used to pressing all though buttons, so if you want to make it easier, a midi mixer/controller might be the way forward.

I want to use the feeling of the crossfader to cut the audio, not the computers crossfader. So i would be scratching like as if i was playing an audio track through virtual vinyl. If i wanted to scratch the video as well i would need a midi mixer. What im saying is that i want an analog mixer with a great fader so i can scratch, i dont want everything to rum through the computer. Could i use an ecler Nuo5? This is perfect for me and i know it has midi out. Im not sure what midi commands it can transmit. The Nuo4 doesnt have effects? Any ideas/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ben

I personally owned a Nou 4 and it is great for MIDI commands but I did not like the mixer as a whole. I returned it for the Pioneer DJM 800. I love the 800 but it is very expensive and not that friendly for MIDI commands. You can map almost every button, knob and slider but they also control other functions so you kind of have to pick and choose which buttons you want to use. The Nou 4 has a separate section for MIDI. If you have the $$$, my advice, get the 800. If not there are plenty of different options as far as controllers and/or mixers. As far as the crossfader curve and having native sound (not using VDJ/VV's crossfader) YES you can do this. That is how I have mine setup. You would just have to uncheck 'link crossfader' and activate the video crossfader in the config menu.

If your looking for a way to do video in the mean time. Do as Andy Taylor suggests. Try creating a keyboard shortcut.
