Topic: Windows Vista - Virtual Memory - and CORTEX

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So my Dell Laptop I bought came with a free Vista Upgrade...

Is VirtualDj going to be compatible...and would there be any advantage of installing Vista on my system fro Virtual DJ.....I know you can add jump drives as ram....I already have 2 gigs of ram....

Also can someone give me an ideal of what my virtual memory should be set at...I have looke dthrough teh forums and I see many comment contradicting each other....

some say with 2 gigs you can turn off virtual memory...others say it should be set 1.5 times higher than the max ram...or should i just let windows manage it for me???

and my final question.....does anyone know if you can use the CORTEX player as a controller for virtual dj???

i have been advised by ms via the technet buitins that a minium of your current ram (2gb) and a max of 1.5 X bigger is advisable)

im not sure if you can use it as a controler

so set it to 2000 and 3500????

Well both answers are true but with 2000MB of RAM i would say to switch off in order to speed up the computer (it depends on the reaction of your computer in fact)

However Vista has a new feature very interesting: you can now use virtual memory on a usb key so it doesn't slow the hard drive anymore and you have memory in addition. The feature is called "ReadyBoost":

My question to you Nardi would be, why would you want to upgrade to Vista? Is it going to add something to your setup that you didn't have before, or is it just for the "eye candy". In my computer experience, upgrading to a new OS when dealing with something mission critical is never usually a good idea. I'm assuming you don't gig with your new laptop. (But then again, you know what happens when you assume. lol) I turn off my virtual memory at home and I have 2 gig in my machine. Typically, you should set your VM at 1.5 times the amount of physical memory installed.

it has a better sound engine

and various proformance fixes

however i think these should have been free as sp3 for xp

derick...

I was just wondering if there were any advantages of using vista.....

My Dell came with a free upgrade so I wasn't sure if I really wanted to to the upgrade if it wasn't going to help anything...

I think I'm just gonna wait and see how it works out for others first....and I'm sure VDJ will be optimized in teh future to take advantage of its new features...

Can you make a dual boot on your DELL or it's only an upgrade? One with XP and the other one with Vista?

you can dual boot with it . if you put the disk in not launhing the install in windows

I've been doing as much reading on Vista as possible. In my opinion, unless you have next generation hardware, and will be using your system to play HD content you might want to stick to XP. So far I've already heard too many horror stories about it taking twice as long to navigate something (the file explorer for example) than it does in XP.

Vista is alot different than XP. Microsoft has changed the way the system looks and operates. However after some learning, you will be used to it. I will be putting Vista Business edition on my laptop sometime next week, and trying out Virtual DJ with all my gear. I will post if I have any problems.

does virtual dj is compatible with vista

I just ordered my laptop a few days ago, and they not giving you any options if you want vist or xp, its just plain vista. I should get my laptop tomorrow or the day after. I will let you know ASAP how it goes. This is the only reason I bought the laptop was for DJ gigs. I'M CROSSING MY FINGERS AND PRAYING TO EVERY GOD!!! =)

I've used the trial version on vista for gigs, no problem at all. I've done 4 hour sets to test its stabilty and so far so good.

I didn't get a vista upgrade, i got a new vista install on a new laptop. i don't like the idea of upgrading operating systems, i prefer a fresh install so there are no conflicts or problems.

Everything running fine on the maximum performance settings, no tweaking needed at all.

I have just installed Vista and there are issues with Virtual DJ and the Vista security system and UAC (User Access Control).

Basically, you don't have write access to the Program Files folders unless you have Administrator privileges. This is more than just being a user in the Administrator group. You must either be logged on as the machine's local administrator, or you must run Virtual DJ as Administrator and if UAC is active confirm the dialog that opens.

What I have done is Checked Run As Administrator on the Compatibility tab of the shortcut.

If an update of Virtual DJ is created for Vista compatibility it will need to avoid writing to the Program Files folder.

You can disable the UAC if you want

Hi DJ Cel

My understanding is that UAC cannot ever be fully disabled. When you disable UAC I know of two side effects.

1) You get reminded by the Security Center that UAC is disabled. I think you can tell it to leave you alone.

2) Vista will deny Execute rights to the Temporary folder which can stop some applications (like Acrobat Reader 8) from installing as they extract to the Temp folder and install from there.

What I did was .....

1) Start >> Run >> SecPol.msc to open the Security Policies.
2) Open Security Settings >> Local Policies >> Security Options.
3) Change "User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation" to Disabled.
4) Change "ser Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode" to Elevate without prompting.
5) Start >> Run >> gpupdate /force to update the policies.

As long as your user belongs to the local machine's Administrators group, it will not ask you again to elevate. This gives you much of the UAC protection without the annoying popups. Applications that need write access to the Program Folders can be marked as Run as Administrator in the shortcut.

Hope this helps.

David

PS: You could always install Virtual DJ in C:\VirtualDJ to avoid the issue with Program Folders write access.

Other than access rights and policies, are there any other issues?
