Topic: Side-List Question - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

Hello all,

I am primarily a wedding DJ. I have been a mobile DJ since 1985. I was a user of Atomix MP3 and now Virtual DJ. I first bought Virtual DJ at version 3.2. I now have it updated to version 4.1.

To start things off, my regualar job is a Shift Control Technician at a nuclear power plant. I am used to really super detailed documentation. My ONLY complaint with VDJ is it's lack of REALLY GREAT DOCUMENTATION. It is an AWESOME product,,,,I mean AWESOME!!!!

My current questions are regarding the side-list. It appears to me, that the side-list was added in version 3.2 (right where I purchased the product).

Question 1: What is the exact DEFINITION of the "side-list"?
Question 2: How does the "side-list" work?
Question 3: What are all of the functions and limitations of the "side-list"?

It would be great if somebody could take the time to help me out here. Thank you in advance!

Side-List - Provides a place to hold tracks that you intend on playing later, a staging area for tracks, a place to hold those requests people ask for so you don't forget.

Drag a track to the list and it stays. Drag a track from the list onto a deck and play, but the track stays in the list (great for those who use snippets or drops on a regular basis), Drag it out of the list and it disappears only from the list.

You can add a track to the side-list. You can remove a track from the side-list. You can listen to a track in the side-list. That's about it.

Hope that helps.

TYVm cstoll! That is exactly what I needed to know.

that was helpful to me also, thanks.

It's really usefull if you have a surprise birthday or other such function at your venue, you can drag your 'happy birthday' songs etc into it and they are right on hand for when the party arrives.

I had a weird occurence with the side list,

about 3 hours into the night I looked and saw about 11 tracks in my side list that I did not drop there throughtout the night, AS a matter of fact, I did not move anything there during the night, only 3 before the night.

Any idea how they got there? Were they added automatically for some reason or did I accidently drop them there? I doubt the last one because it was 11 tracks.

thanks for input

Accidental Drops - it happens.

there is an option in playlist management to put in side list.

Accidental drops in side lis do happen, and very easily without us being aware of it. Happened to me many times.
ALso when I do line dance, I create a playlist of the most popular dance the poeple would like. The at the even I put the playlist into the sidelist.

lets say u ty loading a song on the deck you r playing music on... if u dont want to gtop the curent tack fom playing you click no in window andthe song will go to the side incase you want to play it still therefore you can continue getting other songs ready ;-)

If you set the Repeat value ON in the Playlist, then what you describe happens by default. But it goes to the Playlist (to the bottom of the list) not the SideList.

This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to move the location of the sidelist as it appears on screen? It would be far more use to me if it was positioned on the right (where the playlist is located) rather than having to share space with the database area. Is this something I could change by editing a skin for example?

Don't think it would be feasible. No room for it, that's why sidelist is below. If you need it on the right side then how about just use the playlist and forget about the sidelist.

OOOps , i just realized this about the side list (which is ironically at the bottom) maybe it should be called bottom list.

I thought we were talking about the PLAYLIST to the right.

I use the right sided playlist for songs I want to play later.

Does this matter?

Also this is where about 11 songs appeared when I never put them there. Now is there a reason some songs would be added to the playlist when I didn't mean to? I dont think I accidently dropped them there.

Sorry for the confusion.

@Hoffman - look at my post about four posts up. That's most likely the explanation, you tried to load a song to a deck that was playing. This happens quite often when I just finished mixing from one deck to the other and I know I want to play X track, I double-click on it in the browser, but since I never stopped the track I just mixed from, the selection has no where to go - so it goes to the playlist. Once I stop the track the double-click works to load to the stopped deck. The residual is that I now have that track in my playlist twice.

Hope that explains what might be happening to you.

Hi I am sure that will help me, but I'm confused.

is the side list (on the bottom) the thing to use if you want to pull songs to make sure you play later?

Or is it the playlist?

I like the feature which has it disappear after played. This seems to be in the playlist not the side list.

Also, i noticed in BOTH the sidelist and playlist they dissapear after closing out of VDJ. So if you work at 10 pm and at 6pm want to pull some records aside to play, I have been using a virtual folder I named "play tonight" and I put them in there.

Any thoughts?

thanks,

B

Well you hit everything pretty much on the nose.

Just to clarify -

Right Panel is the PlayList (Most Functionality) - used for AutoMix functions, has option to Erase Played from the list, track lists are not saved automatically well exiting VDJ. Can choose to save the list from the feature button - save as Playlist or Virtual Folder. I recommend if you are putting together a list to play later that night you use the Save as Playlist and name the list something like '2Nite-01-01-2000' obviously using the date for that day.

Center Panel at Bottom - SideList - used for temporary storing files planning on playing. No way to save the list. Just a temporary holding spot. Clears out when VDJ is closed.

I just reckon the sidelist would be more useful if it occupied the spot that the playlist uses - the playlist could be moved to the bottom of the database area. It's just that I'm thinking that most DJs need a place to temporarily store tracks that they plan to play in a bit, more than they need the automix feature. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only time most people use automix is for background music before the disco starts, so the computer can be left unattended. If this is the case, it's no hardship if the playlist is in the slightly more inconvenient location at the bottom of the screen.

I only use the playlist as a "holding area" myself, and it's annoying that the track is deleted from the list when loaded. I often change my mind and pick a different track, which means the first one I picked has been lost and has to be searched for again. I recall PCDJ had a config option for "delete waitlist track on load" which was quite a useful feature to have...

The Playlist is where it should be. Need to learn more about what it can do beyond being the list for the automix process.

Turn the Repeat feature for the playlist ON and the tracks won't disappear.
-- Click on the Circle with the ... in it, from the menu choose 'Repeat' and your 'deleted when loaded' issue is solved.

I really recommend everyone that has read this thread and want to know more about it should really look at the features of the playlist and how along with the sidelist the combination provides a very versatile environment. Click on the Circle with the ... AND learn more.

I stand corrected - cheers for that! You learn something new every day I guess... ;-)
