The gain seems to have a mind of it’s own
I move it manually and then it goes back

Check your settings.
Probably you want to change the "resetGainOnLoad" option to no.
HOWEVER, keep in mind that if you find your self needing to have the gains constantly on a position different than "12 o clock" then your real problem is not gain itself.
You either need a more powerful PA (if you constantly keep gains past 12 o clock) or you need to lower VirtualDJ's headroom (zeroDb setting) if you constantly keep gains prior to 12 o clock.
When using ANY DJ software with it's autoGain enabled (recommended for all, VirtualDJ, Serato, Rekordbox DJ, Traktor, e.t.c.) gain sliders should generally sit at "12 o clock" position and you should only have to do minor gain adjustments here and there on an odd track or two..
PS: If you have changed other gain settings like autoGain, and "gainsliderIncludesAutoGain" please set them back to their default settings.
