I tried a DDJ-1000srt back at beginning of pandemic- but sound didn't work on it properly. I've had a DDJ-SR forever and would like to upgrade, but need to know if it needs mapping or if it's even compatible with V-DJ

And sound is pretty much in hardware on that mixer, if you mean EQ, faders etc.
(but not sure what you meant by "work properly")
You do need to install drivers as well as if on mac unblock the Pioneer driver.
