Topic: Tracks that are unable to be edited in Tag Editor

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi, i have a little situation and need some help where quite a few tracks i have aren't able to be edited in the Tag Editor.

As seen in the image, there are no options to save, write or cancel in aswe would normally see when the tag editor is open. Also there's no info on the file path in the lower half.

I've tried playing with the permissions, unchecked 'Read Only' in the parent folders and applied it, still this problem persist. I can edit the info in the tracks in other software but the feature i would like to use in VDJ is really attach a color to some of these tracks and i can't with the tracks that i am unable to edit.

Why have you blurred the top half?

Without knowing what type of files they are, where you downloaded them from etc. it's hard to give an answer.

I think it might happen with a comment tag that is too long.

All that was blurred out was the name of the track, artist, bpm genre etc. Not that it would make any difference if that wasn't blurred but here's a link of the site i downloaded them from.

I believe it's more than just that. It is somewhere in the ID3 tagging or file permissions but i can't figure it out no matter what i try. I hv been successful in unlocking a small percentage of them but not consistently.

Any chance the full filename of the file is longer than 256 characters ?
Windows OS cannot "access" files with filenames longer than 256 characters.
If so, you need to rename them to smaller filename before any program can have write permissions to them.

PS: Windows 10 have a way to optionally turn on support for filenames longer than 256 characters.
However turning this option on does not guarantee that programs will have write access to them as Windows File Explorer still does not support that long filenames.

Not at all, pretty much less than 256. I even tried renaming some of them and that didn't help. I am able to edit this files in other programs, just not in VDJ.

Well it might, because those tags could contain a clue as to what the problem might be.

But now that you've posted a link to the site where you got the files, I suspect that's part of the problem. It's always very suspicious when sites offer downloads (hosted on other sites) for free, and the terms & conditions on there are highly questionable. Things like "The site author is not responsible for any illegal content " should be sounding alarms bells.

Ok... Will take that into consideration. Being able to use some in the editor and not others had me wondering if it was a file setting that just needed changing. Thx

its not just the file name but the entire file path that needs to be less then 260

so if you have them nested in many folders with long names it could be an issue

example of file path "c:/music/filename.mp3"

Thx for the info but it's not that much characters to file path on these files i'm highlighting.

Could you give a link to one of the songs that shows this problem?

Thx a whole lot. That along the other comments that were pointing me in that direction did the trick. I wouldn't hv figured this out without ur help guys. Appreciate it.

Will also be fixed in a later update so that long comments don't make the buttons disappear.
