Adele is just not that good.
Few people request her songs.
The UK Top 40 is increasingly becoming irrelevant to the people of Britain.
Almost anyone could have covered David Bowie's Life on Mars.
Lorde from New Zealand did what the people of Britain have been doing for weeks, paying tribute to David Bowie.
It would have been fitting if Tom Jones, or Paul McCartney, or a host of other British people had performed this song.
Those that control, and manipulate the music industry have much to answer.

I agree Ron.
I was asked to DJ for my residency staff party last weekend. Most of the staff were in the 18-35 age range.
No-one asked for anything in the top 40, and scanning through it listening to some tracks on Spotify nothing was worth playing. All the current music is not fit for creating a "party atmosphere" as it is purely produced for radio or online listening.
I did get a couple of requests for songs I have never heard of, played them and they were weird. Apart from the requestor no-one was interested in them.
Music is becoming irrelevant and it does create a problem for DJs going forward. Online streaming is taking hold and for that reason people have so much more choice and any chart doesn't mean anything. Just look at Bieber having 4 singles in the top 10 based on streaming alone.
We already get room bookings where no DJ is required and they plug in an iphone. That is going to get more and more common.
I know I say each year is musically worse than the previous one but I believe the end is nigh ......

I have all but given up as a top 40/party DJ, you have to be more creative now, there is still a buzz surrounding DJing but it seems nowadays you have to scratch.
One thing I have gone back to is DJing with key control, I like to hear a change in pitch and used to like taking crowd on a journey, I noticed there all doing it now with software reading key tag, but for me its all monotone with key control on.
Brit awards need to be more patriotic.

If those who organize, and fund the Brits had any class they would have got Michael Ball to sing Life on Mars.
That would have been a worthwhile British tribute to a great man.
Presumably Lorde are being positioned to be the next international big thing.
I never bothered with it, but the wife said the appearance, and antic's of the artists was unsavory.
In 1992, Ball represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second with the song "One Step Out of Time".

A little bit of dignity for the abused UK.
It beats coming second to bottom..

Michael Ball - are you kidding? :-) Not exactly the dictionary definition of cool! More the sort of artist granny likes.
Lorde is. She's just one person - and she's already successful.

Cool..LOL
Where did you get that word oldman ?
No I'm not kidding, it takes a variety of styles, and abilities to put on a good show.
Lorde is almost unknown in the UK, and not even British.
One reasonable top ten hit?
How does this http://www.officialcharts.com/artist/29530/lorde/ compare to Michael Ball OBE.
As for the simulation of sex onstage, well it's often done in strip joints, but we don't need that at the Brits.
I don't think much of a fella wearing dresses either.
No class, no dignity.

Think I'll chime in, and couldn't agree more about the 2015 music. In late 2014 Sam Smith released Stay With Me, sad and slow, and it seems the entire industry instantly went that way. Slow and Boring. The top 2 leading songs of 2015 in the USA were Uptown Funk by Bruno, and Cheerleader by OMI. 2 very upbeat fun songs. But the industry remains slow, dark, and boring. Makes me wonder why the industry cannot see this. How the hell can one party to Adelle's Hello!!?? It's HORRIBLE! But hey Bigron, you brought up Adelle, and if ya wanna play the song Hello, try this wonderful remake these kids made from the song Hello, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmnDEUD9NyI. Now I can party to this one.:)

unknown to maybe you and your age group but lorde is a great artist-writer, she's 19, honestly she is this generations kate bush. [actually talented and not the usual flash the flesh pop diva]
i'm into gabba and breakcore and even i like her music [we all need something to relax to]
ball would have destroyed the bowie track, i can't think of may that would have done it justice. she did a pretty good job.
as for adelle, meh talented but dreary another dido. to my tastes offensively inoffensive, but hell what does my musical opinion count for, i've been caught dancing to a generator.

The Pentatonix version of Royals is pretty damn good too. Then there's the version by Postmodern Jukebox ft Puddles the clown (Yes, really).
On the subject of Postmodern Jukebox, it's well worth checking out their version of Creep (Radiohead) with Haley Reinhart. An exceptional cover.
All the above can be found on YouTube.

mate, eurovision last had musical credibility in the '60s back when we had 2 tv channels and pop radio was a ship in the north sea.
watch the video yourself.
the twerking bit that was Rihanna, what do you expect.
this guy was considered pretty racy for the time

these guys spent years off their heads on drugs

bowie was hardly a clean living soul
the micheal ball video he sang it as himself, lorde sang in the style of bowie
getting ball to cover bowie is like getting pavarotti to cover easy e, good artists but not really in keeping with their sound.
now calm yourself with the thread-bait.
and as for the quip about a man wearing a dress

Royals?
One UK number one, and no other history?
Not even a British national.
A lady with a weak voice singing a strong song, and perhaps struggling to hit the range of notes.
I quite like Dido..but shes not a great singer.
Men are suckers for almost any kind of female voice.
There are times when the class of people like Pavarotti, and Ball is appreciated.
He of course would need top class support, and then he would sound magnificent.
He is a better singer than Tom, and Paul.
In my eyes a dignified tribute from a true Britain was needed.
Don't start me on drugs (The Beatles), especially since Sir Mervin King (he was until recently the governor of the Bank of England) has just stated we are on the cusp of another banking crash.
The decadent days are coming to an end.

I think I would hate it Beatbreaker.
But you must remember I'm a natural chessplayer, and I'm good at finding the right move.
I quickly adapt to almost any musical style.
It's what I do.
I play for my audience.
