Topic: Organizing music folders

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi
I've been organizing and reorganizing my music folders this last days
All my folders are music styles, latin, techno, house, reggaeton, 80s, 70, ...
then i thought about just making artist folders and forget about music styles
and then think of my first amateur gig..what to do..
So how do you guys organize your music ?
do you move chosen folders to a "project" folder allways depending on what you need to mix ?
styles ? artists ?
do you try to avoid long paths to your music files ?

Thanks :)

Dont start making folders for artists manually.
Let vdj do it for you.
Just create a filter folder with the action

Group by artist.

Voila. Done.

Check out the MyLibrary tool in the download section. A great collection of filter folders.

I organize the same way as I did vinyl, when I got it. Now it's about where I got it. I have four hard drives. I have 4 regular video sites I buy from. Each one of them gets it's own drive. Now there is a ton of other stuff on there, but I know what it is, because I put them there. Remix services, PrimeCuts, PromoOnly, and various others are spread around all of these drives. My logic is, if a drive goes down, I can still continue because I will probably have that same song on another drive, that I got from somewhere else. I try not to have a lot of sub folders, as this takes extra steps for the machine. For instance, PrimeCuts sends Latin every other week. Instead of making a sub folder, I give it a separate folder. I have a lot of folders, and some need to be consolidated, which I will get to. However, it is no big deal to type in a few letters to find a song. This is what I see.
Then this is open Those sub folders will be gone, because I do not need the extra step. The HD folder will be gone, because I don't need to know if a track is HD or not. Besides, the tag has that info, and will show when the folder is open. If I have a choice, I will buy the HD, but most of my videos are not HD. HD just started to be available on a consistent basis. If you do Artist you will never get done, ever. I just noticed that Hot Videos 10 and 11 will be consolidated. After this much time I don't care or remember the year. That was good for 2011, because I knew a song was the year before.

Hmm wonder how your getting stuff from Xtendamix since your not in Canada or Overseas??

Didn't think that was legal...... I'll have to check back into them.

I think we all could use a walkthrough with this, for example how do I make new folders etc..

I make my folders in Windows. I make my hard drives as favorites. For filter and virtual folders, you can start on page 52 of the manual, to get an insight.

I would not waste my time. I tried them out but found that I could get the same stuff quicker in the US. The only reason I tried them was for the Lil Suzy Video. I had to have that video.

This is not some easy scripting with the folders and the filterbox.
I would like to have a step by step lesson ;-)

What would the script look like if I want: Videos, Rating 3-5 stars ?

yeah, the rating values are a bit tricky.
I don't remeber the exact values but it was something like
1 star = 1
2 stars = 55
3 stars = 109 ?
...

so a filter folder like
type = video and rating > 60

might work...

just wantet to mention that tool.
Has (nearly) everything you need.
By checking the way the folders are scripted, you can easily create custom one“s

Thanks guys, I got it already.
I did found what I was doing wrong..
In the edit window the "Scope" is set to folder by default, and I changed it to database :-)

Just to add to this thread:

I organize my library in mainly 3 parts:
- music that i normally play
- music that i hear for myself and that are not suitable for my DJing (Dubstep and other more crazy stuff)
- music that i don't hear but DJ for certain things (like dance music for the dance-school partys, there is some music that i wouldn't hear myself)

My normally played music is currently seperated in two folders:
- singles (pattern: <artist> - <title>)
- albums (sub folders in the pattern: [<year>] <album artists> - <album title>
I think that is pretty self-explaining. The singles folder is basicly the core of my DJ library and it has more than 15.000 files so far.

The hear-but-don't-play folder isn't very well sorted since it doesn't need to be but
usually i subgroup the music by their genre like Trap, Dubstep, D'n'B and so on.
In there are all tracks and albums (the albums in their own folder ofcourse).

The DJ-but-not-hear section only contains dance music that i don't like myself at the moment so
it's grouped by the dance like Disco Fox, Cha-cha, Samba, Walz and so on...

So my old technique was to add a tag to all the files that i want to have in a certain 'auto-playlist' (filter folder in VDJ) but
i came to the result that it wasn't really perfect so now i just make playlists with relative paths in MusicBee.

My main DJ playlists contain a playlist for a normal party (more charts music and just background-ish things), a more freaky party (people wanna dance, but not festival style) which includes a bit more hip-hop and exotic stuff, a festival playlist for big partys outside where the people want to jump around (to Bigroom House and that stuff) and finally a crazy playlist for those moments at a festival when you just go crazy as hell, contains the most freaky party music i have, almost rave-like.
Then i also have playlists for chilling, my favourites and a playlist with music that i can play before an event (pre-dj-playlist if you want).

So this is pretty much how i structure my music and in my case it worked out pretty well.

Best Regards and good look for your gig,
Daniel
