Topic: VDJ8 v/s MIK7 [Virtual DJ 8 v/s Mixed In Key 7] FYI

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I own the Pro Version of Virtual DJ 8 & know that the software has the its own algorithm that works out the harmonic key [Brilliant].
I was intrigued to find out about the Mixed In Key 7 [MIK7] ability to set cue points on the song [I know that on VDJ8 you can do this manually].
So i decided to buy MIK7 to try it out.

I was amazed at how accurately it was able set eight cue points on the song, Which means i need to now run my whole library of songs through it. Well because i have three back-up external hard disk. I'm going to connect one hard disk through a computer and let it run it's course. I know when you have a library of 56,000 songs it's going to do all of them manually.

The only difference that i have found is that the harmonic keys for some of the same song on both the software's are different. This leads me to believe that they obvious have their own algorithm. So what i have done is i have kept the VDJ8 harmonic key and in MIK7 you can get it to write its harmonic key in the comment ID tag of the song. The difference in the harmonic keys i find is not a huge issue. I have been using VDJ8 for the last 4yrs and always used its harmonic keys and it does a good job brilliantly. But i think that VDJ8 needs to see how it can also allow the user to also get it to auto select cue points other than manually.

I know that there is a way to get VDJ8 to read the ID tag of the song once MIK7 writes the harmonic key on it. Not tried it yet but will experiment with it.

It works i recommend using the serato cues they seem to read the best for me ... but i do prefer to set my own cue points manually sometimes these auto ones are useless to me if you like their placement that's great should work well for you.

I messed with this a few months ago. For mp3s it's quite accurate at automatically setting cue points.

***BEWARE***
It makes a mess with videos, all cue points are 1/2 second late to where they should be!!! It doesn't matter what format the videos are.
All my new tunes in the last 8 years are videos from Promo Only, I now have about 3 years of videos with 8 useless cue points. When I load a song with them I have to go through and delete them. Some day I will be totally rid of them.

So, if you're using only mp3s fine, if you're using videos, don't even go there.

This is especially true, I ran about a dozen vids and when I opened serato & vdj the cues were off 1/2-1/4. Audio files were ok. I had the keys written in the comments for every file. MIK 7 is a bit more accurate vs vdj 8 IMO.

Thank your for your input. I was not going to use MIK7 on video files Just audio only But that was good advice.

Hi there !
Do we have any update between Mix in Key & VDJ 8 ? All seems perfectly integrated between serato/Tracktor but not VDJ 8 :( Why ?
I do not want to store NRJ & Key in the comment field !
Best

No there is no assistance to VDJ8 by MIK7
