Topic: Process to FIX iTunes Playlists that DON'T update as they should in VDJ

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I wrote a quick process to fix the condition that occurs when, for example, you might add, remove or edit some playlists within iTunes ... and then you open up VDJ (7.4.1 Pro for OSX) and the playlist changes you just made in iTunes are NOT updated in VDJ.

Hope this helps someone out. I had to search for a while to find out exactly what was going on.

Feel free to sticky it if its useful. See below:

Process to force update to “iTunes Music Library.xml” and “iTunes Library.xml” files to enable recent playlist updates in iTunes to reflect in VDJ

This problem is essentially caused by the fact that VDJ (and many other apps, ironically) use the “iTunes Music Library” file to get it iTunes info imported into itself, however, iTunes actually uses the “iTunes Library” file.

Since the changes are made only to the latter, the best way to resolve this is to first close VDJ and iTunes. DELETE the existing “iTunes Music Library” file and then RENAME the “iTunes Library” file to “iTunes Music Library” (since the “iTunes Library” file is always up to date, being the file that iTunes itself uses).

After doing this, restart the iTunes app and it will automatically create a new “iTunes Library” file, thus, bringing BOTH files into proper sync.

Open up VDJ and all should be well. It might be a good time to click on the “Config” button and then on the “Browser” tab and do a CHECK, CLEAN and FIX on your database. I also take this opportunity to go into the iTunes Media folder root and right-click and choose “Add to search DB” so that it rescans the physical files for that tree.
