Topic: Virtual Folders won't stay put. - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

Has anyone else had this problem? I know that virtual folders cannot be alphabetized, so I move mine around and put them in alphabetical order myself.
Then the next time I open up VDJ they have been moved around out of order. Any clue what is causing this?

Problems with saving the changes done in DB is usually due to folder or file permissions.
If you user account (win/mac) has no write permission to the file or folder where the local database is

Check both the folder (Windows -> my documents/virtualdj ) and the file itself (database xml at same location)

See here :
http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/VirtualDJ%20Folder%20Permissions.html

hopefully that fixes it

You must not have virtual folders selected in the settings. You have to go to configurations, browser settings, and select "show virtual folders".

The virtual folders show up just fine and they save just fine, They just won't stay in the order that I put them in (alphabetical).

No I have the newest version.

Thats strange...
Try this just to eliminate any corrupted characters preventing a save..
In VDJ settings, go to browser, and press "FIX" button for all drives.

See if that can sort out the issue.

I will give it a try. But it is saving the folders and the content that I put into them. Just won't stay in the order I put them in. I wish their was a way to automatically put them in alpha order. Computers are supposed to be good at this sort of thing. No pun intended (sort).

Bumping this again. I too can not keep my virtual folders organized. I'm talking the self-created red VDJ folders. When I drag songs in here, they randomly organized themselves every time.

This shouldn't be a difficult fix. It's a computer. They are designed to keep things in alpha numeric order.

Mind telling me how to fix this then? I make virtual folders inside vdj, drag files to them, then they become disorganized.

Sorry, but you can't have files in a virtual folder in a custom order. Like normal folders, they are sorted by artist, title, BPM, etc. depending on which sort column heading you have clicked on. Default order is smart, which puts files that you have recently played near the top and songs already played in the current session at the bottom.

If you need files in an exact specific custom order then you will need to use standard playlists.

Thank you for the detailed response. Maybe this is something worth editing in VDJ 8?

Thats not the problem. Files in virtual folders are alpha numeric. It's the virtual folders themselves that won't stay in the order that you put them.

Are the files on an external drive?

If so, then this may be the cause. Virtual folders for files on external drives are stored in the local database of that drive, so that you can have them available on any computer running VDJ that you plug the drive into (E.g: In house system at a club.)

This means that when you disconnect the drive, the associated virtual folders will disappear. The folder order for external drives may not be kept for this reason.

My files are on an external hard drive. I should have specified, I'm talking about the song files within the red VDJ folders. I can not keep the files inside of the folders organized.

My files are stored on an external drive. However I see no reason why it is that the order of the virtual folders cannot be saved to an external drives database info. I am sure that this is not an issue if you only have a few virtual folders but I have hundreds. Maybe this can be fixed in the new version. By far the database and search features of Virtual DJ are the best I have found on any dj software. I just feel that this is something that can be easily fixed. Truth be told it shouldn't matter if the virtual folders are stored in order or not. They should be re alphabetized when they are displayed in the browser. It doesn't matter what order they are stored in, only how they are displayed on the screen. This is how Windows Explorer works. If I rename a folder, I don't have to physically move it to put it in order. I just rename it and windows explorer automatically puts it where its supposed to be in alpha numeric order. This is how we expect things to work.

VDJ allows the position of virtual folders, filter folders and favourites to be changed in the folder list so that the DJ can put folders that are more important at the top and order them to suit their preferences.

It could be possible in a future version to also store the relative positions of virtual folders stored on an external drive, so that their order is kept when the drive is plugged in (E.g: Folder Pop is #20 in the list, it will put it at that position if possible on any system the drive is plugged into, or at the bottom if the system has less than 20 folders.)

You can ask for this to be considered for a future version in the wishes and new features forum.
