Topic: problems with hdmi

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

ok here's the situation

virtual dj playing through a mixer in a venue - everything's perfect until I plug a hdmi cable into the laptop and tv - then my music stops. Picture is on the tv screen fine but no music

any ideas?

By the way, I use pcdj for karaoke on the same laptop and hdmi is perfect so its not a tv or mixer or laptop problem - there must be something in virtual dj I need to configure

Need to give us what you are using pc/mac and spec's please...

What version of Virtual DJ are you using?

In my experience while Virtual is running and you plug in or unplug a HDMI you will affect the program. I've also crashed Virtual plugging in a flash drive to grab a video clip.
If you're in a pattern of setting up the same way week after week at the same gig you will rarely have a problem if any.

Its that one private gig where some clown wants you to unplug something of yours so you can play theirs, or download something while the musics playing, or get a slide show going last minute on another device that will screw you up.

On a related note, I've also seen one of those heavy braided HDMI cables stress the HDMI port so the signal was interrupted to the tv. Spent 30 minutes trying to configure video settings and it was the p.o.s. cable.

Virtual Dj 7.0.0. Fujitsu laptop on windows 7, 64 bit

I would update vdj to the latest one to start with first.

I am not sure, but observed the following behavior in Windows...
Some graphic cards with HDMI output has also a sound driver, in order to send audio from the system through your TV speakers.
When you plug your HDMI cable, the system recognizes the new device and sometimes, the system changes the primary audio device to the graphic card audio driver.
If you are a Home Edition user, it is pretty likely your sound setup in VirtualDJ is set to primary audio device, then the sound naturally stops when you plug the HDMI cable.
Maybe you didnt realize it because the TV volume was turned off or mute.
You will need to revert primary audio device at windows audio config, and reset the sound setup to have sound through your default audio card.

@speedy 53 - how do I do that?

as you mention it, the sound does come through the tv instead of the mixer

- Close VirtualDJ
- Navigate to Control Panel > hardware and sounds > sound > manage audio devices
- You will see the audio devices on playback tab. With the TV plugged in, you will see the digital audio (HDMI) set to default device.
- Right click at your system's soundcard and choose the option "set as default device". Then, the audio will be routed again through your main card.
- Open VirtualDJ, and test it

I believe once you set the system's card as default device with HDMI connected, the system will understand that the HDMI sound device is not the default device, then even if you connect the HDMI cable again the things wont change.
