Topic: Configuring blocks of Music that Correspond to Specific Times of Day

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hello everyone,

Perhaps someone could help me with an issue. WWSU simulcasts over-the-air and on the web. Music is randomly played (automation) via Virtual DJ Pro during periods when there is not a live DJ. The issue is that there is no rhyme or reason as to what might play at any given time under the automation system. The station has an open format so various genres are broadcast. I want to configure Virtual DJ to do the following:

Fridays 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. only play classic rock
Saturdays 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. only play hiphop
Sundays 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. only play country

The above times and genres are arbitrary, but you get the idea. Basically we are looking for an option to have the automation systerm play blocks of music that correspond to specific categories (via genres or playlists maybe?) during specific time blocks during the day. Obviously we do have the Station ID configured on the automation system to play at the top of every hour +/- 10 minutes to satisfy the FCC, but that is a single file. This has just recently fallen into my lap. I have read the manual and looked through the forums.

Thanks,
Joseph Weldinger

Not to step on VDJ's toes but being a broadcaster myself why not use a real automation system/music scheduling software to accomplish your goal?

To my knowledge VDJ cannot load a schedule/playlist on a timed basis nor can it automatically load the next days playlist at the end of the day.
A real automation system such as Station Playlist Studio (a low cost system) can do both of these things. VDJ CAN play music playlists (m3u, etc) which you could generate using a low-cost music scheduler application such as StationPlaylist Creator - http://www.stationplaylist.com/creator.html. In Creator you can create a 24-hour playlist which will use format clocks that you configure yourself. Example: Set up a Classic Rock clock and schedule it it twice (3pm, 4pm). Put all your Classic Rock songs into a category and let Creator do the automatic scheduling.

From reading up on StationPlaylist and Creator it seems you could automate the entire process...music logs being ran and imported into the automation Station Playlist Studio application.

My previous nightclub used VDJ in an automation/auto-play and it worked great but for your specific purpose it is my professional recommendation you do this right.

Thanks for the responses. I just recently came into this position, and VDJ is what is in place. WWSU is a non-profit college station, so we have a limited budget, but I'll check out the other possible solutions that were mentioned and run them by the station engineer.
