Topic: VDJ broadcast vs VDJ pro basic--and general beginner questions

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi all,

I've read the comparison chart numerous times, and was wondering if yall could help me out by providing any of your input on the pros and cons of each program in comparison to each other. Namely, could someone explain what exactly you get for the extra fifty dollars in VDJ pro basic?

I have been at it on the free home version for about two weeks and really love it, and decided it would be prime time to upgrade to a different version of VDJ. I mix a lot of everything, with more of a focus on top-40 or popular-at-the-moment songs and remixes. I really love mixing and using the music to get people moving. Its great!

Also, if anyone could explain the process for configuring the program to let me preview one track in my headphones, that would be much appreciated! I have done some research on it, and any suggestions on a cheap/good soundcard would be helpful too. Are there any basic accessories that are just plain helpful to have on hand? Chords or stands or other such things that people find very useful and practical to have?
Finally, for lighting what are preferable choices--cheap if at all possible hahaha!

Thanks,

John

As can be seen from the chart, the differences are that Broadcaster has "limited" mic support (you'd have to ask Atomix what that means!) and cannot output each deck to a separate stereo audio channel (which would allow the decks to be sent to individual channels of an external DJ mixer).

Sending each deck out of its own output is important for those who wish to mix on an actual physical mixer, or for working in places which have their own mixer - you can wire your deck outputs to different channels on their mixer.

As for helpful accessories, I'd say one very important thing is to use VDJ with a controller.

It's so much easier than using a mouse or trackpad, and will give you more "cred" from both customers (you look like a DJ) and other DJs (you're not from the "bedroom brigade").

Neither of the VDJ versions you're considering support the use of controllers so before you buy, you should think about getting yourself a controller which includes VDJ LE in the box. Then you have advantages...

First, you have a free version of VDJ which works with your controller. Second, you can upgrade to the full Pro version at a discount because you have an LE version.

Broadcaster has the same limitations as Home FREE, except it allows you to broadcast as a radio station (Hence it's name) as well as very basic mic use (Only the built-in sound card's mic and can be used, providing it is also used for your sound output too (E.g: 5.1/7.1 sound card in desktop PC with front/rear speaker outputs used for master and headphones.))

It also gives you access to download skins, effects and samples from our download pages.

VirtualDJ Basic gives you full sound configuration as per the full VirtualDJ Pro, allowing you to use any sound card(s) of your own choice as well as output the decks separately to an external hardware DJ audio mixer. You can also upgrade from it to the full Pro at a later date less the money that you already paid for Basic.

The full Pro allows you to use MIDI controllers, output video full-screen and much, much more.
