Topic: Best way to beat match and transition from low to high BPM or vice versa

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So I just started using my DJC4 controller and VDJ LE software that came with it. So the question I have is regarding beat matching and transitioning from one BPM to the next (whether you are going up or down). For example if I start my set with a song at 130 bpm and then I want to pick it up and my next rack is at 134 bpm I noticed that if I hit the "Sync" button on the controller VDJ will make the bpm of the 2nd to 130 (which I don't want since I want to pick up the beat after the 1st track).

How can I keep the beat of the 2nd track at the 134 bpm, but be able to beat match and bring in the 2nd track smoothly? Do I just use the pitch slider to get them to beat match? But then if I use that it shows the bpm getting lowered as well. What is the best way to do a set where you are starting at like at 130 bpm and then closing a set around the 136-138 bpm? I hope my question is clear and if anyone can give me some feedback that would be great.

I was using a software called MixMeister Fusion which you can drop in tracks after each other (at various bpms) and it would automatically keep them in sync when going from like 134 bpm to 138 bpm. They way it worked was it would start to increase the bpm at the tracking that was ending to start matching the new track, but it did it in a way that kept the mix in sync and you did not realize it. I'd like to achieve the same thing now with my controller and VDJ LE software.

If anyone can give me some pointers that would be great.

There are several ways. And I use all of these and at any time... But firstly the sync button. You should have 2 - one for each deck. Pressing sync on the left deck will sync it to the the same BPM as the right. As you'd expect, this is reversed for the sync button on the other deck.

You just need to make sure you hit the right button...

Other options:

Manual sync - nudge the pitch fader and use your headphones and ears - totally old skool bro...

Or assuming the playing track is at 130, nudge it up gradually to 132, then hit sync on the other deck or manually nudge that one down to 132 using the old skool method.

Cheers,

Roy

.....or you can hit the 'sync' button to make them the same BPM, then 'lock' them together (small lock next to the pitch onscreen). You can then hit the pitch reset button on the incoming song that slowly resets the pitch which means they both move together as in Mixmeister. ;-)

and another trick i use, say your coming from a track that is 80-90 bpm and your wanting to play a track thats lets say 130-140 where you WILL notice a difference in a speed up or down, you can take that 80-90 track drop a 1/8 loop and use pitch shift up to create a build up, then drop in the new track at a kick/bass drop. obviously you'll need to find a good spot in the new track and cue it, hit play slightly before the spot so you can have a free hand to slide the fader over.

i don't recommend doing this with EVERY track, but you can get away with it from time to time, easier now with some of the latest music and it has breaks and drops as they are becoming more popular in nearly all genres of music.

hope this helps out

Further to secretseven, if you have something particularly slow, 70-75bpm-ish, and want to knock it up a gear, your next track could be 140-150bpm - theres just two beats of the 140-150 track to every one of the 70-75 track. It'll go.

option 1 use break: you can get away with this only once every 30 minutes in my opinion.

option 2 backspin: you can only use this if the next track you're dropping is a major major hit again i'd only do this once or twice the most!

option 3 beat lock: this is more advance because you need to sync the bpm that would sound too slow, make sure you have a breakdown of 32 counts , pitch lock (actually beatlock) and gradually slide the crossfader while manually sliding the pitch slider to default. the other track has to have 32 counts intro if not, loop it.

option 4 use the "loop out" plug in : i can't believe nobody mentioned this

option 5: this is a no nonsense approach, on the count of 4 from your currently playing track, drop the count 1 (eg. a kick) on the next deck

option 6: again after the 4th count . grab the mic and talk hype the crowd up. fatman scoop style lol

option 7: use 4 songs to gradually drop or raise to the bpm you want .

As mentioned loop_out is by far my useful way out from obvious BPM gap. To be nicely activated on vocals without beats.

Other than that, drop some "DJ Tools" remixes with BPM transition points e.g Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven (128 To 144 To 177 Transition) when jumping to bigger gap BPMs.

Where are all these answer coming from....IF your just beginning always use your pitch sliders. Learn how to count measures, and learn to understand time measures. If your going to be a dj learn the basic theories. Giving a new dj a sync button is like give an elementary school kid a calculator. He will get every answer right but will learn nothing.
