Topic: Unable to install or unistall Virtual DJ home edition

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I have previously installed Virtual DJ Home v7.0.4b. When using the program today, I was informed of an update and download v7.3. When installing the update, a dialogue box appeared asking for the installation CD to located. It was searching for a .msi file. I followed the instructions on how to perform a clean reinstall as shown in this thread http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/PC%20Clean%20Re-install.html. Same result.

I decide to uninstall the program through the Control Panel but same dialogue box and it fails to remove the older version of Virtual DJ Home. So I am now unable to uninstall the older version and unable to install the new one.

Can I please have some assistance with this problem? Thanks.

Some registry from a faulty/bad installer or an unfinished installation keeps trying to locate a specific file.
Unfortunately you will have to delete every registry that contains the word "virtualdj" manually.

Type.. regedit in the Search/Run prompt of Windows (START) and press Enter. Search for .. virtualdj and delete every single registry that the search finds. There will be probably a lot. Might take a few minutes to find and delete all.

Once done, install the new version again.

Thanks for your input. I removed all of the registry entries for "VirtualDJ" and then restarted the computer.

I opened the installation file, choose Custom installation, did not select the Virtual DJ toolbar and the other options and still ended up with the same dialogue box asking for a "Virtual DJ Home FREE" disk.

Any other thoughts for solution to this problem?

If it wants a CD with the MSI file on, burn the MSI file to a CDR (or CDRW) and point the s/w to it when it asks...

Repeat uninstall and choose typical not custom, and let it do its stuff, should be good to go.

The installation file is an .exe file and the installation process is searching for a .msi file. I have tried to point the installation to the installer file but to no avail.

I tried reinstalling the software and salected the "Typical" installation and the same result.

Thanks for your suggestions though.

After I deleted all the records for "virtualdj" from the Rergistry Editor, I did a registry clean with Uniblue Registry Cleaner. It did not make a difference.

I have tried to paste/insert screenshots but I am unable. How can I send the screenshots?

What I can't understand is........why is a downloaded install file asking for a CD?

As a test, I tried installing Home under another login and it didn't ask for a CD.

Maybe you should try that - create another login for yourself and install VDJ under that name.

Upload your images to a server and post the links here.

I am running Windows XP with SP3. I created a new user account with administrator rights, logged in and then installed Virtual DJ v7.3 without an issue.

I am curious as to what the cause of the problem is. Most likely I will wipe my hard drive and do a free install, so hopefully that will eliminated the issue permanently.

No, don't wipe your drive! That's a drastic move, and should be a (very) last resort!

The message you're seeing "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available" is not specific to VDJ. It's a general Windows error dialogue.

A quick Google tells me that it can happen when an install gets corrupted/confused. It's trying to repair itself but can't find the file(s) to do so.

The fact you can get it working under a different logon tells me that it's user specific. What's the name of the MSI file it's looking for?

I read the installation file again and when I got to that screen, I clicked the "Browse" button. The box that opened up showed it was looking for a file named "install_virtualdj_home.msi".

So it would seem that Atomix have changed the install file from an MSI (when you installed 7.0.4) to an EXE for the latest version.

You must have moved or deleted that MSI file, so when you did the new install, the new EXE found the 7.0.4. installation and tried to uninstall it, but couldn't because the MSI file was missing.

If you'd reinstalled 7.0.4 and then left the MSI file in place, I suspect installation of the newer VDJ would've worked fine.

I always keep any install files that I download, for reasons like that.

At one stage I tried reinstalling the older version and I was happy to keep the older version in mean time. However, I had the same issue during the installation process and I had to abort the installation.
