Do you mean broadcast to a few friends from within VDJ?
Or do you mean to set up website, and make a web-radio?

Last one, you do need a licence, and it costs quite a bit.. You need to pay pr listener, pr song played, and in addition for bandwidth and server costs

I would like to set up a website, and make a web-radio
how much would all this cost me or do I do it via shoutcast live365 or listen to my radio or VDJ
or can I upload my recording's to my facebook website?

Andrew

Are you planning recorded sets?
Or you mean to mix live?

Recorded sets are easy, you can host that on most any website plan :)

for live mixing, google for shoutcast servers .. price differs a lot, but if you think you'll have less than 50 listeners or so.. its not too bad

for example :
http://www.makeavoice.com/shoutcast2/

but there are 1000s of them, google around for good prices

I would like to live radio shows what would the costs be for that

this is probably the wrong forums for that but i'll try to help.

VDJ is audio software that you can use to stream TO a streaming server.

For streaming server you need to use a HOST something similar along the lines of icastcenter.com. Your streaming HOST will provide you with the server information you need to plug into VDJ so it knows where to send the audio to stream.

You take the links your HOST provides you and post on your website.

If you are in the United States you will certainly need to make sure you have all the appropriate streaming licenses. I recommend StreamLicensing.com. IF you are located in Canada they also cover SOCAN.

You mentioned posting your mixes to your website...record your mixes in mp3 and upload them to your website host or wherever you want to host your dj sets. A lot of DJs like and use Podomatic.com

You mentioned "web radio"...StreamLicensing launches your streams on different platforms. Listeners go to your streamlicensing page then select which player (winamp, itunes, etc) they want to listen to your stream.

I hope that information helps points you in the right direction.

I have a question which I cannot find an answer to regarding royalties.

I setup Virtual DJ Broadcaster with listen2myradio.com, install was a breeze, however, my concern is all the legal stuff.

I will be using a playlist that I setup using content unlimited music which I pay monthly to virtual dj.

My question is this: Since I pay a content unlimited subscription, does this cover royalty fees?

Does content unlimited pay royalties to the major record labels and artist?

In this case, it is okay to stream on an internet radio legally?

My stream will be both live and also on auto dj during off hours.

Any information will be helpful.
Thanks

ContentUnlimited does not cover royalty fees to be able to perform music in public and/or broadcast it. The subscription fee pays for your right to be able to legally stream the track and play it privately while your subscription is active.

Regardless of the source (CD, iTunes, music streaming service (ContentUnlimited), vinyl record, etc.), you must have licenses from the appropriate authorities in your country to be able to play music in public and/or broadcast it.

If you are playing in a bar/club, then depending on the laws of your country, the venue will usually have appropriate public performance licenses to cover you when you are playing at that venue.

If you are using a commercial radio broadcast server (I.e: A service where you legally rent a radio broadcast server) then the broadcast royalties may already be covered (Paid by your subscription fee to the broadcast service and/or by adverts.) For further details, please check with the provider of the broadcast service that you are using (Or intend to use.)

If you are using the broadcast feature built into VirtualDJ itself only (Listeners are directly connecting to this on your computer rather than you broadcasting to a radio server), then you will need to obtain appropriate licenses (Except if it's private and just you and a few friends are listening.)

@ Bounce...check out https://www.streamlicensing.com/directory/index.cgi?action=page&page=pricing

That should answer your questions as far as licensing goes. With their plans you must launch the stream through their website/your page within their website. You can set up an html file that looks like your site but host it on streamlicensing so when listeners click on the stream it is launching from the streamlicensing.com domain thus you are fully covered. There are also other rules about how many songs from 1 album/artist you can play with in a certain amount of time. Bottom line...do you homework and read up on everything FIRST!

Internet Broadcasting can be an expensive hobby if not done correctly (being fined/sued out the wazoo for not being properly licensed, etc) but the prices are reasonable too if you can afford it. I have a friend who has a "station" where he/she pays $22.50 for licensing only (does not cover the actual internet streams...that is with a stream host provider like icastcenter.com). The licensing plans with stream licensing prices vary based on how many simultaneous listeners/hours spent listening you have and you also have to report how much revenue (money you make from your station...revenue minus expenses - streamlicensing expense is not part of your expenses--this is stuff like music purchased, production (jingles, sweepers, etc) paid for, how much you pay each month for your stream(s), etc).

I hope that helps.
