Topic: playlist for a 40 year old birthday party

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Just wondering if any one out there has a good playlist for an upcoming 40 year old birthday party in Southern California?

yeah its called am raido...

What you play will depend on who's attending. This is DJing 101.

What's the age range of the guests? What type of music do they like?

A list of tracks that worked great at Johns 40th may fail miserably at Erics 40th. Each event is unique.

Speak to the client and get a short list of their favourite songs. Use that as a starting point.

40 yr old = 80's era for high school/etc. But there really is no one magic list that is going to just work for everyone.

What I always do is ask a client to list off about 10 songs that they and their guests would like to hear. I then use that to gauge what kind of listening background they have. Generate a larger playlist of tunes based on that!

Now if you don't know that era very much, check out a site called allmusic.com and search the artists that your client listed. It will then link you to other similar artists/scenes from that era.

TL,DR?...Micheal Jackson, Kool and the Gang, and Madonna :)

That's F'n funny! Except I just turned 34 so it hits closer to home lol

Have to read the audience but is it a friend event or a family event? Age ranges? Likes? Dislikes? I would interview the client first then develop a plan from there. Should be easy once you are given a hint. If the age range is in the 38-45 range 80's and early 90's work well, as well as come of the more mainstream current music (makes the women feel younger to dance to that) but check.

unfortunately it's not a straightforward math problem......

2012-40 =1972 ..........

get a list of the birthday persons faves and ask for the favorites of friends and family

add some of the required cheeses like celebration , we are family .....

if you aren't familiar with 70s n 80s music , look up the billboard compilations for those years

also , sadly the end of the 70's pretty much marks the end of much looser free form

music programming at the radio stations .......my point being back then before the 80s you had very

long songs , very short songs , instrumentals , quirky funny stuff , etc and the music was more interesting

and much less formulaic, and bad language wasn't even conceivable or allowed.....so, there are hit songs

that are very unusual by our present "standards" (if any) .... so choose carefully

Thank you all for your comments. Will talk to the client and get an idea what they want to hear...
