Topic: Putting pre-listening on its own channel in advanced config

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

The one really big problem that I have with VDJ (and that hasn't been fixed in 7.1) is that I can't pre-listen (the little green triangle underneath the browser) anymore, when I use the advanced audio configuration with my 4 deck mixer. It's just not audible on any channel, doesn't matter what I do, so it would be nice if you would add to VDJ 8 (or whatever version comes next) the possibility, to give the pre-listening its own channel in the advanced audio configuration. That way I don't have to load new tracks on deck 4 or higher to pre-listen to them.

Unless i am mistaken, this is already possible.
You need to use a skin with one spare deck though.. meaning that if you need 2 decks you have to choose a 3 or 4 deck skin (or edit the first line of the xml file nbdeck="x"). That way an additional deck will be availble in Advanced Sound setup.
You will also need a spare sound output from a sound card to route to a an empty mixer channel.
From the prel;isten options you need now to specify the output you wish to have your prelisten.

I could be more specific, if you could provide me more infos about your current hardware/software setup.

Okay, that would be cool, because to be honest, I spent the last 3/4 with trying every combination I could come up with:

Anyway, I use:

- Macbook
- VDJ 7 Pro
- Hercules DJ Trim 4&6
- Behringer DJX 900 USB as mixer and 2nd audio interface

Advanced config is:

Master - DJX900 - Output 1&2
Headphones - DJX 900 - Output 1&2
Deck 1 - DJ Trim 4 & 6 - Output 1&2
Deck 2 - DJ Trim 4 & 6 - Output 3&4
Deck 3 - DJ Trim 4 & 6 - Output 5&6
(Deck 4 - DJ Trim 4 & 6 - Output 5&6) (I only use this sparely)
Record Loopback - DJ Trim 4&6 - Input 1&2

Well, your Sound Setup seems totally wrong to me.
Its not correct to have Master & Headphones with Deck 1..x in the same setup..
Anyways, try this..
Use a 4 deck skin.
Connect Outputs 1,2 of Trim with Inputs 3,4 of your mixer (CH2).
Connect Outputs 3,4 of Trim with Inputs 5,6 of your mixer (CH3)
Connect Outputs.. 5,6 of Trim with Inputs 7,8 of your mixer (CH4)
Connect Booth or better Tape out of your mixer with inputs 1,2 of Trim (for Record)

Sound Setup.
Deck 1 .. Trim outs 1,2
Deck 2 ..Trim outs 3,4
Deck 3 ..Trim.. outs 5,6
Deck 4.. Behringer ..outs 1,2 *(note)
Record Loopback ..Trim ..Inputs 1.2

*(note) i assume that outputs 1,2 should be that USB (CH1) of your mixer, but could be wrong. Try different chanels, e.g. 3,4 if not working. But certainly you need to turn that CH to USB mode.

Headphones and speakers should be plugged to the mixer of course.

The above Sound setup should provide Decks 1..3 of software to CH2..4 of your mixer, and the CH1 should be for prelistening. If you click on the the prelisten options icon on the skin, it should now show all possible outputs (4). You should choose the 4rth one.

The above setup should work for any mixer, so i think it should work for you as well.

EDIT: (Forgot to turn it to USB) It DOES work, the problem is just that the prelisten channel also plays every other channel at the same time, and each of them louder than my preslistened track, which makes it kinda useless. I hope you have a solution for this too. But if not, thank you anyway. :)

ANYWAY, to come back to the original purpose of this thread, it would be nice if there would be in future an easier way to make this work (or work at all).

So, it appears that the CH1 with the above setup plays the Master output ? If volume faders of CH2..4 are at 0% and the decks are playing, do you hear them from CH1 ?

I assume you have deleted the line for Master from your previous Sound setup and followed my suggestion.

How many outputs do you see available in the drop down menu, for the Deck4 line (Behringer) ?

Okay, now it works. I don't know what happened. I'm 99% sure that I did delete the Master line yesterday, but since it didn't work then, I just assume that I did not.

Thanks for your help, man. (I still hope an easier way will added to V8. I would love to just go to the advanced config and be able to pick a channel for prelistening from a drop down menu. )
