after reading through all the posts i can honestly say: i don't care anymore what they call me as long as i get paid.
dj or artist who puts his own spin on things? occasionally one or the other or both - depends on the situation. have i played sets with songs or vids that were pre-mixed and acted like i was doing something? not often. 4 maybe 5 times in the last few years. its not something i make a habit of.

On what occasions have you done that?

I've advised my client that he does not have to answer that.

like i listen.
1st time i did it, i was feeling extremely ill and like the saying says "the show must go on" - so i put in a cd i had premixed for emergencies. that was about 8 years ago.
and the last time was about a month and a half ago after having some serious intestinal issues when i dropped a premixed 10 minute video in.
under any other circumstances i would never do that even if it meant sounding terrible with the mixing and making a fool of myself.
button pusher or not, we get paid to entertain a group of people by playing music to them.

OBJECTION, OBJECTION! Your honor, please instruct the jurors to disregard my clients last statements. He is suffering from a relapse of a serious intestinal issue, brought on by inhaling an ungodly amount of pina colada flavored smoke. He is also delusional from continued exposure to years of bright, flashing lights. He was also recently diagnosed with PTSD, from being continuously bombarded with very high decibels, of computer generated music. He is also severely depressed, because hot, young, half naked women, want to do all sorts of depraved sexual things to him, night after night, and he has to say no, because he is a God fearing, married man.
Furthermore, these actions are covered by local, state, federal, and international DJ codes, statues, regulations, and rules of conduct. Under international statue #2437658945673218743895432765900-45678912345678901234567890098765432, code # 12332145678906543216785432, page #687 paragraph 6, it states " A DJ in a redneck club, while suffering from an intestinal issue, may drop in a 10 minute, pre-mixed video, in order to throw up, pee, and/or dodo". These are accepted practices all over the world, and are not considered "button pushing".
So your honor, I move that my clients statements be stricken from the records, an deemed inadmissible.
"Am I finished? Yes I'm finished, your honor." "Out of order, I'm out of order?". "NO YOU'RE OUT OF ORDER". "CONTEMPT, I GOT YOUR CONTEMPT RIGHT HERE. GET YOUR PUCKING HANDS OFF ME, DON'T TAZE ME, BRO. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH".

I don't understand Why you would need to fake it.........are you getting paid to bounce around and twiddle knobs?? As long as you had music going What's the big deal if you were actually doing it live?? I mean after all it was your pre made mix which I'm assuming was the purpose of it anyways...... So if something goes wrong and you start playing the pre made mix do you call someone into the booth to act like their mixing while you figure out what went wrong??

Pinching and twisting AMAHM Like Button. (Funny Stuff)

i'll see your objection and raise you the fake boobs i got flashed with last night.
on second thought, i won't. she needed a better surgeon, and her friend was cuter and about 20lbs lighter.
eventually someone is gonna have the last word on this topic before it gets locked down.
if a dj is an entertainer and they're entertaining with music while "twiddling their knobs" then more power to them if they admit it up front. personally i have never... EVER... fist-pumped in a dj booth or club. not even as a joke. i'll do the cabbage patch, i'll do the sprinkler, and what the hell i might even fake the running man every once in a while. but acting to entertain is a level of whoring myself that i havent gotten to yet.
now lets light up them lasers and fog machines and strobe on out.

What we have here is, failure to communicate!
I have been reading this thread and really enjoy the entertainment of this discussion.
Here is my take on this whole button pushing thing.
Before one can decide if our DJ profession fits into the definition of an artist, I believe it is important to review the meaning of the word and see if it fits.
Artist:
noun
1. a person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria.
2. a person who practices one of the fine arts, especially a painter or sculptor.
3. a person whose trade or profession requires a knowledge of design, drawing, painting, etc.: a commercial artist.
4. a person who works in one of the performing arts, as an actor, musician, or singer; a public performer: a mime artist; an artist of the dance.
5. a person whose work exhibits exceptional skill.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/artist
Obviously all DJ's fit into this category. Even if they don't exhibit exceptional skill but are just faking it then that makes them an actor and thus an artist.
It seems that some people will take the smallest part of a definition and view it as the only definition of the word in their own view regardless of the true meaning defined in the dictionary. This definition does include musician but it also includes a public performer.
So discussion SOLVED.

the elitist argument about djiing..... i love it vinyl vs cds vs timecode cds and vinyl vs controllers with platters vs controllers with buttons.....
it's so stupid!
to all the djs that still play vinyl that shit on djs that play using anything else (you know us button pushers) i have but one question....
When you go to the clubs you play at, where do you park you horse and buggy #questionmark
why should it matter how a dj moves the crowd if their technique is on point and selection is on point. what ever your personal hardware preference is your job as a dj is to move the crowd! no dj has ever been hired and kept a constant gig because he looked like he was really working and sweating in the dj booth.
all the artistry and mysticism and awwww behind djing was all made up by djs who wanted to seem better than new up and coming djs.
do djs that were properly trained play better than those who learned over the years using pc based software.....
i'd say 99% of the time i'd say yes but that does not mean that a button pusher can't out play a traditional style dj.
GET OVER YOURSELVES and just please you crowd!!!!!!

I don't claim to be a DJ but there are things that just can't be done on a static platter (cdj or midi controller) which is Why I prefer to use vinyl timecodes. It's just a fact when it comes to scratching........ do I hate on the next man for using a controller, no!! He/She should atleast have that controller mastered inside and out before ever playing live with it though. I've seen to many kids make the jump and totally loose it because they thought it was gonna be the same, wrong!!

i agree with you there beatbreaker1 because it is not about a djs perception of another dj.... it is about a djs skill and a djs comfort.
you should play on what ever allows you to play most comfortably, what ever allows you to go in! at the end of the night the crowd needs to want to do it again or rather not have the party stop at all!!!!!!
on a side note beatbreaker1 have you ever used the ns7 controller with virtual dj #questionmark
if you have, do you find it to be as accurate as vinyl, when scratching when used with virtual dj #questionmark

Yes I have and after tweaking the scratch latency setting I was pretty happy with it.... but again that's not a static platter, Yes you can shut the motor off but then you might as well just be using cdjs, lol!!
For me it's just that I'm most comfortable on turntables. Touched my first set at age 11 and I'm 36 now, lol! I do use a MIDI mixer and embrace the technology....... as well as push buttons, lmao!!
