Topic: Setlist export - Like Rekordbox

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I may be on my own with this one, but a feature that would be rather handy would be to be able to create a "setlist" that I can export to an SD Card / USB stick, etc that would include all the tracks, cue points, loops points, bpm info etc, etc that Virtual DJ needs.

Let me expand...

I am now part of a duo, we both run VDJ, but don't manage to get together before a gig (we do a monthly "live" night as part of our radio show), so at the moment it involves both of us bringing along both laptops, controllers, sound cards, etc, etc...

We have both used Rekordbox and whilst musing in the pub, we thought it's be a cracking idea if you could do something similiar in VDJ.

So that would mean that we could each, in our own homes, setup our setlists (playlists) in which we put our cue points, loop point, etc, etc - as we do now - but instead of dragging all the kit, we can press a button and the following is saved to an external storage device:

1) Tracks are copied from source to external drive
2) Cue points, loop points etc. are copied to external drive (XML?)
3) all data VDJ needs regarding the tracks is transferred to external drive (XML?)

and anything else I've forgotten....

This would allow us to use one laptop, controller, etc, etc...and all we have to do is have our USB stick (or whatever external drive we want) to hand with our set on.

I know that VDJ does save your cue points, but as I change the cue points in tracks depending on the mix, it's not really a feature for me.

Maybe you can do something like this already, I don't know.

Since you don't need to retain a specific file structure on the "external" device, then you can do all this stuff allready.

Steps:
1. Plug a USB stick on your laptop
2. Start VDJ and browse your tracks, lists, e.t.c.
3. Select (highlight) the tracks you want to export (e.g. all the tracks of a Virtual Folder, or all the tracks of a Filter folder, or half the tracks of a specific playlist, e.t.c.)
4. Right-Click on a highlighted track
5. Select File operations -> Copy to
6. Browse to your USB flash drive
7. Hit Ok and wait until VDJ copies the files
8. Repeat the above steps to copy more files from different playlists, Filter folders e.t.c as needed.
9. Done!
10. Remove your USB stick and move it to another PC running VDJ. All the info regarding your songs (BPM, Cues, e.t.c.) will be there!!!

If you take a close look on your USB flash drive you will see that there's an XML file on it's root. Yes, this is the database for the USB drive and it has been created / updated automatically by VDJ when you copied your tracks.

I bow to your superior knowledge...that's something worth knowing :) :)

have a notional star :)

Hello, I realize this thread is old, but I have another question regarding this same concept. So, if I'm just using a CDJ or MDJ etc. JUST with my USB, without the use of a computer or Virtual DJ itself, with the CDJs completely on their own, will they read the cue point and tag info saved on the USB correctly? Or do I HAVE to have Virtual DJ connected for it to accurately read that information?

I use Virtual DJ to set my cues and tags and for analyzing my tracks, but because I can't export that info into rekordbox, I'm avoiding making the switch as it will be a tiresome process to redo all my cues and tags within rekordbox. But as far as I know, CDJs and the like require a USB to have a set that is exported from rekordbox for it to read all the info about the songs correctly. I will be playing my first set later this month and we will be using a pair of Gemini MDJ-1000s, on their own, without it being connected to a computer. So essentially my point is that can I do the same with Virtual DJ that can be accomplished with rekordbox, that is, export my set onto a USB with tags and cues that I did with Virtual DJ, and have the MDJs accurately load the information and tracks in a quick manner?

No.

If you look at the Gemini web site, you'll see that the Gemini units have their own librarian software.

If it's anything like the vast majority of librarian programs then it will use its own database format and probably won't import data from competitors software.
